Learning unit contents

With the implementation of the core curriculum, social studies education is an integral part of the frameworks and programs from P1 (first year of primary school) to S3 (third year of secondary school). It is therefore a mandatory requirement for all primary school teachers and their students, as well as for teachers who will be responsible for social studies education during the first three years of secondary school.

This course offers a critical examination of the process of didactic transposition as implemented by primary school teachers when teaching social studies, as well as the conceptions and didactic principles presented in initial teacher training. Based on data collected on this subject and an analysis of a teaching resource intended for primary school pupils, the aim is then to design and trial a teaching and learning sequence centred on one of the core concepts covered in the 'social studies' section of the FHGES curriculum framework (history, geography, economics and social studies).

The learning process comprises five stages:

  • Analysing a teaching resource intended for primary school pupils (social studies) with the aim of identifying the elements required for the effective preparation of a teaching resource.
  • Observe teaching practice in primary school classes; meet with primary school teachers (from different school networks), primary school headteachers, primary school teacher trainers, and students enrolled on teacher training programmes (Bachelor's degree in Education, Sections 2 and 3) in order to gather information enabling the identification of the specific characteristics of teaching practice in primary schools.
  • Gain a basic understanding of social sciences and identify resources that could be used in the design of a teaching aid.
  • Design and trial a teaching resource aimed at primary school pupils and focusing on the selected basic concept.
  • Evaluate the trial and write an analytical report.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

This course pursues three objectives.

  • To question the methods of learning fundamental knowledge or skills in the early stages of the school curriculum in order to inform reflections and practical courses of action for a pedagogical continuum of social education.
  • To draw on on-site observations and the study of evidence (reference frameworks, curricula, and any preparations provided by teachers) to identify sensitive areas in the design of social science learning programs.
  • To analyse the data collected (objectification and systematisation) and the results of the experiment in order to identify the key points in the design of a teaching and learning sequence in social education.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Mastery of basic concepts in social sciences.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Use of teaching materials covering a basic concept in social sciences.

Analysis of the FHGES framework and the curricula of the various school networks.

Classroom observation in primary schools; conducting interviews with key informants.

Collective analysis of the data collected and collective design of a teaching sequence for one of the basic concepts in social sciences included in the FHGES framework.

Trialling of a teaching sequence in a primary school class and evaluation of this trial.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Written work / report

Further information:

Writing an individual report, which must include:

  • a presentation of the institutional context (the role of social education within the core curriculum);
  • an analysis of the observations made (teaching practices in a primary school class; the views of teachers, trainers and students enrolled in Section 2);
  • the teaching material tested in the classroom;
  • a critical assessment of this trial;
  • a summary conclusion setting out the key points in the design of a teaching and learning sequence focusing on a basic concept in social studies.
The following will be taken into account when assessing this report:

  • formal presentation (spelling, syntax, readability, attention to detail);
  • the coherence of the analysis and the relevance of the justifications;
  • the nuances introduced in the discussion of the issue;
  • the relevance of the teaching choices made in the learning sequence;
  • the originality of the teaching approach in the learning sequence;
  • the quality of the proposals set out in the conclusions.

Work placement(s)

No teaching placement, but classroom observations in primary schools and a teaching trial in a real-life setting.
