Learning unit contents
This course aims to give students a better understanding of gender-related issues and challenges. First, the course will introduce key concepts related to gender, incorporating a critical analysis of gender norms and social relations, as well as the persistence of inequalities between men and women in various sectors (health, social protection, employment, education, etc.). The overall objective is to understand why gender should be an integral part of development issues.
The second part will be more practical and will present a framework for analyzing the integration of gender into "development" policies, programs, and projects. It will provide a better understanding of how gender is concretely taken into account in a public policy or development programme, drawing on concrete examples from research projects and case studies primarily from countries in the Global South. It is also planned to invite a speaker from a country of the Global South who is directly involved in designing and implementing policies or programmes that integrate gender dimension, in order to shed light on the successes and challenges in this area.
The course is an invite to rethink the foundations of gender and development through the lens of intersectionality and decolonial approaches, while acknowledging the persistence of gender inequalities that underscore the importance of integrating this dimension into "development" policies, programs, and projects.
