Learning unit contents

The seminar has two objectives: practical support and methodological support:

On a practical level:

• providing ad hoc support to students on the organizational aspects of their internship and thesis,
• providing technical support in the completion of their internship, internship report, and thesis.

• reviewing the main stages of qualitative research in the social sciences according to students' needs and expectations,
• introducing students to qualitative research in the social sciences by having them practice the initial exploratory stages in groups on a common topic related to their thesis/internship.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this seminar, students will have received the tools and advice they need to:

• organize their academic year by completing, in addition to their courses and assignments, an internship and a thesis,
• meet the FaSS deadlines (see the schedule on the "Regulations and Forms" page of the Faculty's website: https://www.student.fass.uliege.be/cms/c_7151929/fr/reglements-et-formulaires ),
•  structure and write their thesis and internship report,
• explore in groups a research topic related to their internship/thesis and report on it in a structured form to be completed,
• organize the submission of their thesis and its defense.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The seminar will take place exclusively during the first four-month term, according to a specific schedule. It is designed to be highly participatory and dynamic, and is based on a flipped classroom approach as well as group work.
Attendance is strongly recommended. Instructors reserve the right not to respond to emails regarding content covered during class sessions, as these topics are addressed in person.

Assessment for the seminar is based on the submission of a standard report detailing the results of an exploratory research project conducted in groups of three students.

The research topic may be chosen freely, but it must be related to the internship and/or thesis work of the various group members.

The report must be submitted on the eCampus (Ultra) platform no later than 11:59 p.m. on the first day of the exam period.


Note - Technical Issues:

In the event of a technical problem when submitting the report, students are required to:

immediately notify the teaching staff by email;
provide evidence of the malfunction (screenshot or photograph) to verify the issue.

Any instance of plagiarism will result in the assignment being deemed invalid and will prevent the student from earning credits for the TFB (see the rules regarding plagiarism available on the following webpage: https://my.student.uliege.be/cms/c_11161787/fr/mystudent-prevenir-le-plagiat). 

Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence:

We also refer students to the ULiège Charter on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Academic Work (see https://www.student.uliege.be/cms/c_19230399/fr/ faq-student-uliege-charter-on-the-use-of-generative-artificial-intelligence-in-academic-work ).  This charter outlines the distinction between what is permitted or desirable and what is not in the use of these generative AI systems (courses, assignments, exams, reports, and other academic work. Students are therefore required to complete the form declaring their use of generative AI in their work, available on the "Regulations" page of the Faculty's website: https://www.student.fass.uliege.be/cms/c_7151929/fr/reglements-et-formulaires or on Ultra. 

For the purposes of this course, the use of AI is permitted only for spelling and grammar correction or for rephrasing, without altering the intellectual content.

Students must:

• complete a table specifying any uses of AI and the type of AI used;
• make all empirical materials (recordings, transcripts) and their analytical processing (field notes, coding, analyses) available to the teaching team.

• Research paper of no more than 8 to 10 pages (excluding cover page, table of contents, introduction/conclusion, appendices) to be written according to the required format (see Ultra).
• Work to be carried out in groups on a social science research topic related to the internship/thesis of the group members.
• Target a research topic that is common to all students in the group in terms of research field, target audience, etc.
• Submit via the Ultra assignment tool by 11:59 p.m. on the first day of the exam session (file name: SEMI001_Group No. XXX_Name 1, Name 2, Name 3, etc.).
• The text must be written in Times New Roman 12 point or Arial 11 point, with single spacing (footnotes in 10 point, single spacing).
• The submission procedures are the same for the first and second sessions: the file must be submitted on the Ultra platform by the first day of the session (May or August), no later than 11:59 p.m. In the second session, it is possible to complete the work alone if a request has been made by email to the teaching team before June 1.

• Explore a research topic in a group through exploratory research.
• Define a research topic and contextualize it: establish the scope of the research and the limits of the proposed investigation.
• Self-analyze and develop critical and reflective thinking skills in the social sciences.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

First session: 29/09 from 12:00 to 2:00 pm (see course schedule).

The schedule was sent out at the beginning of the year and is available on eCampus (Ultra): sessions are held on an irregular basis throughout the year.

For now, 7 sessions are scheduled: September 29, October 13, October 20, November 3, November 10, November 17, and November 24.

In-person sessions. Podcasts are available to review the key steps involved in defending and submitting the thesis.
