Learning unit contents

The instruction focuses on the clinical reasoning that enables the physiotherapist to apply passive techniques to the patient and/or guide them through therapeutic exercises. All these elements are based on scientific evidence. These theoretical courses are followed chronologically by practical sessions, where students learn to master the techniques and assessment methods in a hands-on setting.

Course list:

1. Care pathways and models
2-5: Lumbar spine
6: Chronic spinal pain
7: Sacroiliac joint
8-9: Neck pain
10: Surgical spine conditions
11: Thoracic spine

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

This course aims to develop a rigorous and structured clinical approach to spinal disorders in students, grounded in the principles of evidence-based practice (EBP). Students will master the skills required to conduct a comprehensive patient history, gather and interpret clinical data, and integrate this information into a clinical reasoning process that leads to an appropriate physical therapy diagnosis. Particular emphasis will be placed on triage skills to distinguish between conditions suitable for physical therapy management and those requiring referral to other healthcare professionals. The course draws upon the biopsychosocial model and the conceptual framework of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) to foster a holistic understanding of the patient and their environment. Students will also be encouraged to use a shared vocabulary that facilitates communication with patients, peers, and other healthcare professionals. Finally, the course seeks to cultivate a reflective mindset based on the continuous updating of scientific knowledge, enabling students to tailor interventions to the latest research findings and the specific needs of each patient.
