Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Anatomy
Functional anatomy of the spine.
Biomechanics
...
Spine surgery
Introduction to surgical procedures.
Prevention at work
Prevention services in occupational health
Types of roles or functions that could be undertaken by the physiotherapist in the work environment
Strategies to prevent the evolution from acute/subacute to chronic low back pain
Problem based learning
Problem-Based Learning (PBL) session focusing on the spine, based on the interactive analysis of a clinical case. The session aims to integrate and apply the knowledge acquired throughout the spine module (anatomy, biomechanics, pathophysiology, clinical features, and principles of management) within a contextualized clinical situation.
Based on the clinical case, students are expected to structure their clinical reasoning process: analyze the available information, formulate and prioritize hypotheses, identify additional information required, interpret clinical findings, establish a physiotherapy diagnosis, and propose appropriate management principles. The clinical situation is considered from a biopsychosocial perspective and, where relevant, using the ICF framework.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Anatomy
Functional anatomy of the spine for future physical therapists
- Understand and know the normal alignment of the rachis in the various plans of the space and the factors which influence it.
- Understand and know the potential mobility of the spinal elements according to the specific anatomy of the various segments.
- Understand and know the function of the various muscular groups of the trunk.
Biomechanics
...
Spine surgery
To acknowledge bone injury (traumatic or non-traumatic) and soft tissue injury.
To guide therapeutic management.
To explain the surgical strategy and surgical limits to a patient.
Prevention at work
To understand the context factors that may promote or hinder prevention activities directed at the work environment by the physiotherapist
Problem based learning
By the end of the session, students will be able to:
- Integrate and apply their fundamental and clinical knowledge related to the spine to analyze a clinical situation;
- Collect, select, and interpret relevant information obtained from the patient history and clinical examination;
- Formulate, challenge, and prioritize clinical hypotheses, adapting their reasoning as new information becomes available;
- Identify elements requiring clinical triage and recognize situations requiring referral to another healthcare professional;
- Develop and justify a physiotherapy diagnosis, integrating the biological, psychological, and social dimensions of the patient's situation;
- Use the ICF framework to structure the understanding of functioning, activity limitations, participation restrictions, and contextual factors;
- Propose and justify the main components of an individualized management plan, consistent with the assessment findings and the patient's needs and goals;
- Justify clinical decisions based on available scientific evidence and develop a critical and reflective approach to their own reasoning.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Problem based learning
Students should have a good command of the fundamental knowledge covered in the spine module, including functional anatomy of the spine and associated structures, biomechanical principles, the main pathophysiological and clinical features of spinal conditions, and the fundamentals of their assessment and physiotherapy management.
Students should also have the basic skills required to conduct a patient history and clinical examination, interpret the information collected, and formulate clinical hypotheses. Basic knowledge of the biopsychosocial model, the ICF framework, and the principles of Evidence-Based Practice is also expected.
This wording also emphasizes that the PBL session is not primarily intended to introduce new knowledge about the spine, but rather to promote the integration, application, and transfer of previously acquired knowledge through clinical reasoning.
