Techniques of spiral rehabilitation
Spinal rehabilitation (Prof C. DEMOULIN)
This practical course is directly linked to the theoretical course included in the "spine module" which is about the assessment and management of patients with spinal dysfunction/pain.
This course includes 1 theoretical session about patients handling and 14 practical sessions (2h) aiming at mastering the techniques described in the related theoretical course as well as favoring clinical reasoning which is necessary to propose the good treatment at the good time to the right patient.
This course is an introduction to the University Certificate in Manual Therapy organized in the Department.
The practical sessions are about:
- ways to handle patients and heavy weigths
- assessment of a patient (subjective examination and objective examination by means of an assessment of the posture, of the active and passive mobility, of the muscle function, of the neurological and neurodynamic function, of the sensori-motor control as well as a palpation examination).
- management of patients with low back pain, thoracic pain, neck pain, a scoliosis, etc.
- management of patients before and after a spine surgery or requiring a multidisciplinary rehabilitation program.

Learning Outcomes By the end of the course, students will be able to:

Mobilise and integrate theoretical, scientific, and practical knowledge to develop an individualised physiotherapy management plan for patients presenting with spinal disorders or spinal pain.

Conduct a structured physiotherapy patient history, enabling them to collect, analyse, and interpret relevant clinical information, identify the patient's needs and expectations, and formulate clinical hypotheses.
-
Integrate the principles of clinical triage into the assessment of patients with spinal pain, particularly to identify findings requiring adaptation of management or referral to another healthcare professional.

Design and perform a relevant clinical and functional assessment, selecting appropriate tests and outcome measures based on the information collected during the patient history and the clinical hypotheses formulated.

Analyse and interpret findings from the patient history and clinical assessment in order to develop a structured clinical reasoning process and formulate a justified physiotherapy diagnosis.

Integrate the biopsychosocial model and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) into a comprehensive conceptualisation of the patient's situation, considering impairments, activity limitations, participation restrictions, and relevant contextual factors.

Develop an individualised therapeutic plan based on the physiotherapy diagnosis, defining and prioritising relevant therapeutic goals in collaboration with the patient.

Design and implement an appropriate physiotherapy intervention, including active and/or passive approaches, consistent with the clinical reasoning process, therapeutic goals, patient characteristics and preferences, and the available scientific evidence.

Evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention and reassess the patient's progress in order to adapt, continue, or discontinue components of the management plan when necessary.

Design and teach an individualised home exercise programme, adapted to the patient's abilities, goals, and situation, and provide the information required for its correct, safe, and autonomous implementation.

Integrate the patient as a partner in the management process, encouraging participation in therapeutic decision-making, autonomy, and active involvement in the management of their spinal condition.

Communicate with the patient in a professional, clear, and appropriate manner, using active listening, empathy, and communication strategies adapted to the patient, the clinical context, and the patient's sociocultural characteristics.

Communicate relevant clinical information in a structured manner, both orally and/or in writing, using shared professional terminology and appropriate communication tools.

Integrate therapeutic patient education and health promotion strategies into patient management in order to enhance the patient's understanding of their condition, motivation, autonomy, and adoption of health-promoting behaviours.

Adopt an Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) approach by integrating current and relevant scientific evidence, clinical expertise, and the patient's characteristics, values, and preferences into clinical reasoning and therapeutic decision-making.

Justify assessment and treatment choices based on clinical reasoning and the available scientific evidence, while adopting a reflective approach that enables decisions to be questioned and adapted when necessary.

Integrate patient management within an interprofessional context, understanding the roles of different healthcare professionals, communicating relevant information, and identifying situations requiring collaboration with or referral to another healthcare professional.

Student participation in practical work sessions is obligatory. Any absence must be explained. A student who is not present at a minimum number of practical work sessions (a minimum of 12 sessions) may be refused access to the practical exam.
Failure to prepare for a practical session by watching the provided videos (when requested by the instructors) will be considered as an absence from the practical session.

This course represents 75% of the grade of the integrated activity (the remaining 25% coming from the "Practical Palpatory Anatomy" course of this teaching activity).
A mark below 10/20 obtained in either of these two course components will result in a failure for that component. The assessment for this component must be retaken in a subsequent examination session.
If a student is unable to fill in a form completely at the beginning of the examination to show that they have mastered the red, yellow, blue and black flags, the examination will be stopped and a mark of 0/20 will be awarded.
