Learning unit contents

The aim of this course is to familiarize students with psychology, notably by helping them understand the scientific approach that underpins this discipline. The course will primarily address key concepts in health psychology (e.g., risk compensation and attribution theory) as well as several health-related models. Students will also be introduced to the relationship between personality, health behaviours, and participation in sport and physical activity. They will be familiarized with the clinical approach in psychology (e.g., prevention) and withinnovations in healthcare. Finally, the course will present the major schools of thought that have shaped the contemporary landscape ofpsychological science.

Beyond the theoretical concepts covered, practical examples will be used throughout the course to illustrate and contextualize the material.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, the student will be able to understand the key concepts of health psychology. They will also be made aware of the nuances that exist between received ideas and ideas resulting from scientific research in psychology (e.g., importance of the scientific method).

He will know the main theoretical perspectives in psychology and will be able to understand the different conceptions of psychological functioning. He will have a better representation of the supports that can be used in connection with sports practice.

Examination

The final grade is based on:

  • A group project with an oral presentation, completed outside the examination period
AND

  • A written examination consisting of closed-ended questions (multiple-choice questions or generalized true/false questions; marked out of 20)
To pass the assessment, students must obtain a minimum grade of 10/20 for the group project and 10/20 for the written examination.

If both components are passed, the final grade will be the average of the two marks.

If only the group project is failed, students will be required to complete a resit assignment during the second examination session.

If only the closed-ended questions of the written examination are failed, the final grade will correspond to the failing examination mark, and students will be required to retake the examination during the second examination session.

A collective examination review session will be organized upon registration within 15 days of the publication of the results. Detailed arrangements will be communicated via eCampus and MyULiège.
