Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The aim of this course is to provide fundamental knowledge of medical microbiology. It focuses on the main infectious diseases encountered in the community, selected according to their frequency and relevance to pharmaceutical practice.

The different infections will be covered from the following perspectives:

  • epidemiology;
  • clinical manifestations;
  • microbiological diagnosis;
  • treatment;
  • prevention measures.
Note: Viral infections are not covered in this course (see the General and Medical Virology course taught by Prof. N. Jacobs).

Course Content

  • Introduction to the microbiology laboratory
  • Commensal flora
  • Gastrointestinal tract infections
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Acute lower respiratory tract infections
  • Tuberculosis
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Fungal infections
  • Malaria
  • Mother-to-child infection: toxoplasmosis
  • Lyme disease and echinococcosis

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course and practical sessions, students will be able to:

  • describe the epidemiology of the main infectious diseases encountered in the community;
  • explain the main measures used to prevent infectious diseases;
  • understand the therapeutic strategies used in their management;
  • identify the main techniques used in a microbiology laboratory for the diagnosis of infectious diseases.
This course will enable:

  • future community pharmacists to provide advice on infection prevention and the follow-up of prescribed treatments;
  • future clinical biologists to acquire the essential foundations for their specialised training;
  • future professionals working in the pharmaceutical industry or research to develop a solid knowledge of medical microbiology, facilitating their integration into the field of anti-infective agents;
  • other students to acquire a general knowledge of medical microbiology.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Prerequisites

  • General Biology for Medical Sciences (including an introduction to genetics)
  • General Immunology

These courses provide the essential foundations required to understand this course.

Co-requisite

  • General and Medical Virology (Prof. N. Jacobs)

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course includes:

  • lectures;
  • podcasts;
  • compulsory practical sessions.
Students may ask questions at the end of the lectures or by email.

The practical sessions consist of three two-hour, in-person sessions.

They provide students with practical experience in:

  • the main microbiological diagnostic techniques;
  • the observation and identification of microorganisms;
  • the interpretation of the main microbiological tests.
Attendance

Attendance at the practical sessions is compulsory.

Any absence must be justified by a medical certificate.

Wearing a lab coat is compulsory. Gloves required for biological procedures are provided.

Assessment of Practical Sessions

The practical sessions are assessed in two ways:

  • a multiple-choice questionnaire (MCQ) included in the theoretical examination;
  • a practical report completed online via E-Campus.

Any unjustified absence from the practical sessions will result in an absence grade (A) for the course unit.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Blended learning

Further information:

  • In-person lectures
  • Podcasts
  • In-person practical sessions (compulsory attendance)
The course is coordinated by Prof. Marie-Pierre Hayette.

The practical sessions are organised in student groups and supervised by Mr Khalid El Moussaoui (Department of Clinical Microbiology, CHU de Liège).

The course syllabus, lecture materials and practical manual are available on E-Campus.

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire )

Written work / report

Further information:

The assessment consists of a written multiple-choice examination (MCQ), organised during the examination period and marked using the "For Guessing" correction method.

The questions cover:

  • the theoretical course content;
  • the material covered during the practical sessions.
Absences from Practical Sessions

  • Any unjustified absence from a practical session will result in a zero grade for the practical report, corresponding to a penalty of 10% of the final grade.
  • An absence justified by a medical certificate will not result in any penalty. In some cases, particularly if a student is unable to attend all practical sessions for justified reasons, the practical report may be removed and the weighting of the assessment adjusted accordingly.
  • Any practical report that is not submitted will receive a zero grade.
Grades obtained for the practical sessions may be carried over only within the same academic year. They cannot be carried over from one academic year to the next.

Work placement(s)

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

The practical sessions are coordinated by Mr Khalid El Moussaoui (University Assistant, Department of Clinical Microbiology, CHU de Liège).

Attendance is compulsory.

A LAB COAT MUST BE WORN to enter the laboratories.

Changes of group are allowed only in exceptional circumstances, depending on organisational possibilities and upon presentation of a valid justification.
