Information systems in movement sciences and physiotherapy
Throughout their time at university, students have several opportunities to develop their ability to search, evaluate and use scientific information. This course is one such opportunity. The knowledge and skills acquired will be useful throughout their studies and professional lives.
The course introduces the fundamentals of evidence-based practice (EBP) and the role of scientific literature in this approach. It outlines the scientific publication process and the issues involved, as well as the specific characteristics of literature in the fields of motor sciences and physiotherapy.
The course also introduces the main information search tools specialising in these fields, including those incorporating artificial intelligence features. Students will learn the key steps in formulating research questions, identifying relevant sources, and analysing scientific publications.
Particular attention is paid to understanding the different types of literature review and to adopting best practice in citing sources. The course aims to raise awareness of academic integrity and critical thinking when using scientific information.
Communication methods for scientific interviews
Course unit description:
The aim of this course is to introduce students to the verbal and non-verbal communication techniques required to conduct semi-structured or open-ended interviews in a research context.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Evidence-based practice
The aim of this course is to enable students to search for, understand, and critically analyze data from scientific literature so that they can effectively apply it in their future professional practice. Specifically, students must be able to use this data to support clinical assessment, evaluate the appropriateness of care, and adapt interventions based on the patient's situation, available knowledge, and the care context.
The course also aims to prepare students for planning and conducting a thesis or research project by fostering the integration of research ethics principles, respect for human dignity, and the ethical and legal frameworks governing research and care activities.
More broadly, the critical analysis of scientific knowledge contributes to the development of professional responsibility, professional conduct, and professional identity. It enables future professionals to adopt a reflective practice based on up-to-date evidence and to fulfill their civic responsibilities within the healthcare sector. Finally, the course emphasizes the importance of continuing education for maintaining and updating the skills required for high-quality practice.
Information systems in movement sciences and physiotherapy
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
- understand the principles of evidence-based practice (EBP) and the role of scientific publications, including literature reviews, in this approach;
- describe the main stages of the scientific publication process and its challenges;
- formulate a clinical or research question, and use appropriate tools to search for scientific publications, particularly in the fields of motor sciences and physiotherapy;
- analyse the relevance of a publication in relation to a given question;
- apply the principles of academic integrity by correctly citing sources and developing a critical and responsible approach to scientific information.
