General Objective To enable physicians to better understand the functioning of a clinical laboratory, the factors affecting the quality of laboratory results, and the limitations of result interpretation, in order to improve the use of laboratory testing in everyday clinical practice.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

 


  • Understand the workflow of a clinical laboratory and the journey of a sample from collection to result reporting.

  • Identify the main sources of error during the pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases and their impact on result quality.

  • Understand the role of the clinical biologist and recognize situations where collaboration with the laboratory can enhance patient care.

  • Describe the main organizational and regulatory aspects of clinical laboratory practice, including reimbursement issues.

  • Understand the principles, performance characteristics, and limitations of the major analytical techniques used in clinical chemistry, without focusing on technical details.

  • Interpret laboratory results critically by considering the clinical context, analytical limitations, and potential interference
