- They are permitted to resit the assessed subject during the second term (May-June);
Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Study of Spanish grammar and practice of the four language skills: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, writing, and conversation.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The course deepens students' knowledge of Spanish grammar and strengthens the communicative skills acquired during their first year of language learning (cf. cours de Langue Espagnole I: LROM9065-2).
It aims to develop comprehension, production and interaction skills in Spanish at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), while supporting progression towards level B2+, particularly in terms of fluency, accuracy and autonomy in language use (CVC. Plan Curricular del Instituto Cervantes. Índice.).
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
A solid command of basic grammar and foundational vocabulary is required. As such, a diploma or certificate from the Spanish Language I course is mandatory.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The Spanish Language II course is organised as follows: one hour of theoretical instruction, two hours of practical classes (TP) in small groups, and one hour alternating between conversation and language reinforcement each week. Attendance at all these sessions, amounting to four hours per week, is compulsory. Some of the work associated with the practical classes must be completed at home.
Attention: after two unjustified absences from practical classes, each additional unjustified absence will result in a deduction from the mark for this component of the course: a third absence will result in a one-point deduction.
The various course components require regular language and grammar practice, the completion of translation and written expression exercises, and active participation in class.
TI students are only required to follow the theory course.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Blended learning
Further information:
Learning activities will mainly take place in person, although some online sessions are also planned. Within the framework of the UNIC European University, the virtual language tandem programme with students from Ruhr-Universität Bochum, first introduced as a pilot in 2025-2026, will continue in the 2026-2027 academic year. Participation is voluntary and remains limited to a small number of students.
The additional work carried out as part of this tandem may result in the award of one bonus point on the final course grade, expressed out of 20, depending on the participating student's attendance and the quality and consistency of their work. This bonus may only be awarded if, before the bonus is applied, the student has obtained an overall weighted final grade of at least 10/20 for the course. It may therefore under no circumstances enable a student who has failed the course to reach the passing grade.

Continuous assessment
Further information:
I. Continuous assessment: December written test
A compulsory written test will be organised outside the examination period during December. The date and time will be communicated to students in due course. This test forms part of continuous assessment and replaces the assessment previously held during the January examination period.
Passing this test does not exempt students from being assessed on the same content in subsequent examinations.
The test lasts 3 hours and 30 minutes for students taking practical classes (TP): 2 hours for the theoretical grammar component and 1 hour and 30 minutes for the practical component. For Translation and Interpreting (TI) students, the test covers only the theoretical course content and lasts 2 hours.
For students taking practical classes, the theoretical component accounts for 70% of the test mark and the practical component for 30%. For TI students, the theoretical component accounts for 100% of the mark.
Language accuracy, including in explanations justifying answers to grammar questions, forms part of the assessment criteria.
The mark obtained in this test will count towards 20% of the final course mark for the May-June examination period only if it is at least 10/20. A mark below 10/20 will be excluded from the calculation of the final mark and will not, in itself, prevent the student from passing the course. Taking this test remains compulsory.
II. May-June examination period
If the December test mark is at least 10/20, the final mark is calculated using the following weightings:
For students taking practical classes, excluding TI students:
- Continuous assessment of practical classes (April-May): 20%.
- Mark carried forward from the December written test: 20%.
- May-June written examination: 40%.
- Oral examination: 20%.
- Mark carried forward from the December written test: 20%.
- May-June written examination: 80%.
For students taking practical classes, excluding TI students:
- Continuous assessment of practical classes (April-May): 20%.
- May-June written examination: 60%.
- Oral examination: 20%.
- May-June written examination: 100%.
Only students who have obtained a weighted average of at least 8/20 across the assessment components other than the oral examination may take the oral examination. This average is calculated using the continuous assessment mark for practical classes, the May-June written examination mark and, only if it is at least 10/20, the December test mark. The weightings specified above are applied and rescaled to the total weight of the components included.
The list of students eligible to take the oral examination will be published once the written examination has been marked.
The oral examination will focus primarily on the content covered in practical classes. Grammar questions may also be asked.
III. Resit examination period (August - September)
Students who fail the course in the first examination period must take all examinations required in the resit period, including any examination whose corresponding assessment was passed in the first examination period. No marks are carried forward and no partial exemptions are granted. The continuous assessment mark for practical classes and the December test mark are not carried forward to the resit period.
For students taking practical classes, excluding TI students, the final mark consists of:
- The August written examination: 70%.
- The August oral examination: 30%.
Assessment covers all content studied throughout the academic year.
Only students who obtain at least 8/20 in the resit written examination may take the oral examination.
The oral examination is individual and covers the content studied in grammar and practical classes, as well as the compulsory readings discussed in class, which students are expected to explore in greater depth. Further details about the oral assessment criteria will be provided in class.
IV. Bonus for participation in the language tandem programme
Voluntary participation in the virtual language tandem programme with students from Ruhr-Universität Bochum may earn students one additional point on their final course mark out of 20, depending on their attendance and the diligence demonstrated throughout the programme.
This bonus may only be awarded after confirming that the student has passed the course, calculated without the bonus. The student must therefore have obtained a weighted final grade of at least 10/20 before the bonus is applied.
The bonus cannot, under any circumstances, compensate for a fail, grant access to the oral examination or turn a failing course result into a pass. The specific rule concerning the December test remains applicable: a mark below 10/20 in this test, excluded from the calculation of the final mark, does not prevent the bonus from being awarded if all other requirements for passing have been met.
