Learning unit contents
The course aims to trace the history of the Italian language, from its origins to the end of the 16th century. Here are the main stages of this journey, which, wherever possible, focuses on a particular author:
- Latin and its variations
- From Latin to the 'vernaculars'
- Early texts
- Medieval multilingualism - Dante
- The Trecento - Petrarch and Boccaccio
- Latin and the vernacular in the Quattrocento - Humanism - Leon Battista Alberti
- Codification in the Cinquecento and the question of language - Pietro Bembo
- Towards the Seicento - the Accademia della Crusca
The historical overview will be complemented by a guided reading of key texts.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of the course, students will be able to trace the early stages of the history of the Italian language and explain the factors that contributed to the emergence of Florentine as a language of literary expression.
They will be able to structure a linguistic analysis of the gradual transition from Latin to the Italian vernaculars and then to Florentine, taking into account the tensions inherent in this change.
They will be able to name the authors who played a significant role in this development and to analyse their texts by placing them in their historical context.

Reading, analysis and commentary aimed at global and detailed comprehension of texts in Italian. Interactive method.
Participation in the course will be required and requested.

The final mark will take into account the student's language skills (pronunciation, vocabulary, grammatical accuracy). Too many weaknesses may result in a penalty of up to -2 marks being deducted from the mark (out of 20) obtained in the exam.
