Learning unit contents
The course will consist of two parts:
- An introduction to the political, social, and cultural history of Italy in the second half of the twentieth century.
- A focus on the 1970s: the years of terrorism, the Years of Lead.
A second part will focus on more recent reinterpretations of the Years of Lead, notably through the perspective of a filmmaker such as Marco Bellocchio, in the series Esterno notte (2022), but also that of a writer from a younger generation, such as Dario Ferrari (La ricreazione è finita, 2023). Turning to these works will make it possible to examine the ways in which a past that was not necessarily experienced directly by those who represent it today is transmitted and reworked.
The course will also include sessions devoted to bibliographic research. This part will focus on techniques and referencing styles for citing sources in academic work in Italian.
Theory

Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of the course, students will have acquired an overview of the history of twentieth-century Italy. They will be encouraged to reflect on the ways in which literature and the arts engage with a given historical period, beyond its purely political dimension: what do they tell us, for example, through their formal choices, narrative devices, or strategies of representation? How do these works contribute to constructing, transmitting, or reinterpreting the memory of an era?
Students will also learn how to write a bibliography in Italian.

A written bibliographical research paper to be submitted by a date agreed upon with the students, no later than the first day of the exam session AND oral exam.
The written assignment will count for 15% of the final mark of the learning unit.
