Learning unit contents

Having examined the question of modernism in Italian literature and its profound links with European modernism, we will turn our attention to the place occupied within it by two novels, L. Pirandello's Il fu Mattia Pascal (1904) and I. Svevo's La coscienza di Zeno (1923).

We will study the narrative, the characters, time, space, narrative models, and the main themes, before going on to examine the structure and style. Finally, we will consider whether these works can be classified as Bildungsromane (novels of formation).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • to contextualise the works of Pirandello and Svevo within Italian modernism and, more broadly, European modernism
  • to provide an appropriate commentary on the novel
  • to formulate independent judgements and critically interpret information by analysing and synthesising data and knowledge from different sources.
