Learning unit contents

This course complements and expands upon the "Neuropsychology of Language" course (Parts 1 and 2 - 45 hours) taught in the first year of the Master's program (M1). As the two courses form an inseparable whole, mastering the M1 course content is an essential prerequisite for mastering the Master 2 course.

The theoretical part covers the following areas:

- Assessment and revalidation of syntactic disorders in production and comprehension.

- Assessment and revalidation of dysarthria (particularly in Parkinson's disease).

- Assessment and rehabilitation of primary progressive aphasia.

- Neuropsychology and speech-language pathology.

- Rehabilitation of short-term memory in aphasia (the assessment component was covered in M1).

- Language assessment in patients with altered states of consciousness.

- Functional and pragmatic assessment and rehabilitation of communication disorders.

The practical part includes the following activities:

- Participation in a day-long event organized by the "Ensemble" aphasia patient group, focusing notably on quality of life following a brain injury.

- Analysis and interpretation of patient examination videos, and presentation of results in the form of an assessment report.

- Presentation of a rehabilitation-focused article on topics not covered in the lectures (e.g., bilingual aphasia, acquired acalculia, group therapies, constraint-induced therapies, music therapy).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The aim of this course is to:

- enable students to select the most appropriate assessment tools based on specific patient profiles, train them to interpret patterns of impairment to identify affected language components, and equip them to assess patients' functional communication skills;

- teach students how to document assessment results appropriately and train them to communicate effectively with patients and their families;

- enable students to design effective treatment programs based on assessment findings and to evaluate the specific impact of the rehabilitation-not only on the targeted skills but also on activities of daily living and the patient's quality of life;

- provide students with in-depth knowledge of various acquired language disorders.
