Learning unit contents
This course is intended for second-year Master's students from all specialisations at GxABT. It focuses primarily on specialised language.
Throughout the course, we will explore a variety of topics through videos and specialised publications. The skills developed will include reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written production in academic Dutch, and both individual and group oral production.
One main topic will be explored in groups throughout the academic year, with a focus on written and oral production. The aim will be to create a portfolio that will be discussed during the oral examination.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of the course, students will have acquired the specialized vocabulary necessary to understand a variety of scientific texts and videos related to their field of expertise. They will also be able to express themselves, both in writing and orally, on topics closely connected to their area of study.
A comprehensive project (oral and written) will be carried out during the year, integrating all the skills required for the effective communication of scientific information.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
A basic knowledge of Dutch is essential. Refresher tools will be provided for those who may require them.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The different skills involved in language learning will be developed throughout the course: reading and listening comprehension, as well as written and oral production. These skills will be supported by grammar revision and the study of specialised vocabulary.
Active participation is essential.

Continuous Assessment With regard to the continuous assessment organised throughout the academic year, please note that, in accordance with Article 64 of the General Regulations on Studies and Examinations (RGEE), assignments completed during teaching periods (written assignments, oral presentations, projects, etc.) whose grades contribute to the calculation of the final grade are organised only once per academic year.
For pedagogical and practical reasons - in particular, continuous supervision, specific guidance, group work, classroom interaction and the practical organisation of presentations - these assessments cannot be retaken during the second examination session. The grade obtained for these assignments is considered to apply to both examination sessions and is therefore retained when calculating the final grade for both the first and second examination sessions.

One group oral examination only, based on the portfolio produced collaboratively during the academic year.
Further information
The continuous assessment will consist of selected parts of the portfolio. These assignments will be completed during the first semester (Q1). In case of absence, students will have the opportunity to complete them during the month of January.
The oral examination will take place in groups, using the working groups established at the beginning of the academic year. It will take the form of a defence of the portfolio on the topic of the year. Oral communication skills will be assessed.
Please note: The final version of the portfolio must be submitted three weeks before the oral examination!
You will receive an overall grade for both the portfolio and the oral presentation, based on the assessment criteria and grading scale provided at the beginning of the academic year.
