Learning unit contents
The Spanish 1+ course is primarily intended for students who have already had some exposure to Spanish during secondary education, while remaining accessible to complete beginners provided that they undertake regular independent study.
The course revisits the foundations of Spanish following an accelerated progression. It is structured around ten thematic units combining communicative situations, vocabulary, grammar, verb conjugation, and practical activities.
All four language skills are developed: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, written production, and oral production. Particular attention is paid to linguistic accuracy and to difficulties that are specific to French-speaking learners.
During the second semester, listening comprehension is developed more systematically through materials at CEFR B1 level.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Within the framework of the programme's competency-based learning outcomes, this course aims to enable students to:
- communicate in Spanish in everyday situations;
- understand written and spoken texts;
- master the main grammatical, lexical, and verb structures covered in the course;
- develop autonomy and rigour in their language learning;
- gain insight into a range of realities within the Spanish-speaking world.
In particular, students should be able to communicate on familiar topics, take part in simple exchanges, and produce short written texts. In listening comprehension, they should be able to understand the main points of clear, standard speech on familiar topics. They should also be able to use the grammatical structures and vocabulary studied in the course appropriately.
The course places equal emphasis on communication and linguistic accuracy.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
No formal prior knowledge of Spanish is required.
However, the course is primarily designed for students who have already had some exposure to Spanish. It revisits the fundamentals from the beginning, but at a sustained pace.
Complete beginners may take the course provided that they undertake substantial and regular independent study from the start of the academic year.
A good command of French is recommended, as some explanations are based on comparisons between French and Spanish.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course combines:
- the study and use of dialogues and audio and video materials;
- grammatical and lexical explanations;
- grammar, conjugation, vocabulary, and translation exercises;
- reading and listening comprehension activities;
- question-and-answer activities, role plays, and other interactive tasks;
- short written assignments;
- digital exercises and resources to be completed independently.
Regular independent study is essential.
