Learning unit contents

The course prepares future physiotherapists to design and implement a health project focused on promoting physical activity among their patients. It addresses health education and prevention, in coordination with the curative dimension of physiotherapy care.

Structured around the 5As - ASK-ASSESS, ADVISE, AGREE, ASSIST and ARRANGE - the course teaches students to assess physical activity, sedentary behaviour, motivation, barriers, resources, and individual, social and environmental health determinants; provide tailored advice; agree on a shared goal; and arrange follow-up that supports sustainable behaviour change.

Particular attention is given to patient empowerment, autonomy and responsibility. Drawing on principles of therapeutic patient education and physical literacy, future physiotherapists learn to support informed decision-making and the maintenance of adapted, meaningful and sustained physical activity.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

y the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • design a health project promoting physical activity based on a clinical situation;
  • develop a health education and prevention intervention tailored to the patient's profile and coordinated with their curative care;
  • assess the patient's physical activity and sedentary behaviour, as well as their needs, motivation, barriers, resources, stage of change, and individual, social and environmental health determinants;
  • apply the 5As to provide tailored advice, agree on a SMART goal and support informed decision-making;
  • use principles of therapeutic patient education and physical literacy to foster patient empowerment, autonomy and responsibility;
  • propose support strategies and follow-up that promote safe, adapted, meaningful and sustained physical activity.
