Learning unit contents
The objectives of the course are to teach on-site observational drawing and to help students understand the principles and challenges of observational perspective, as well as to contextualize the drawing of vegetation and landscape architecture elements (fences, ground features, drainage systems, small heritage structures) within this perspective. Drawing and observing trees and plants-their species, scale, and subtle characteristics-will be central to the learning process.
The goal is to learn how to prioritize, on-site, the information to be conveyed in order to accurately depict the space (proportions, scales, and the organization of the site so as not to mislead the viewer of the drawing) and to use appropriate representational tools to create renderings that sensitively convey the essence of the location.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
- Ability to quickly (in about 1 hour) create a sketch on-site depicting an urban or rural setting, including vegetation and a rough outline of the built environment.
- Ability to control one's line work and master various rendering techniques
- Ability to establish a perspective, including the horizon line and vanishing points...
- Ability to depict the built environment (proportions, hierarchies, etc.)
- Ability to depict vegetation (drawing trees, shrubs, flower beds, ground cover, etc.)
- Ability to incorporate figures and understand scale.
- Ability to render light and shadow-and, if appropriate, color-to convey the essence of the location (quality of lighting, materials, climatic conditions, etc.).

The annual grade will be the arithmetic mean of the grades obtained for each class and will constitute the grade for the first examination session.
Only one justified absence per four-month term will be taken into account in the assessment. Any other absences will be considered a lack of commitment to learning and will therefore be penalised with a grade of 0 for that session.
In the event of a justified absence, or if a medical certificate is provided, work equivalent to the missed class is expected for the following class or within 5 days after the end date of the medical certificate.
Assessment Criteria 1. Commitment to Learning and Care Please note that mere attendance at the class is not a condition for passing.
2. Mastery of Learning Outcomes Students must demonstrate the ability to:
- Quickly produce a drawing (approximately 1 hour) on site, representing an urban or rural spatial environment, including both built and vegetated contexts.
- Demonstrate control of line work and rendering techniques.
- Construct a perspective drawing from observation, including the horizon line, receding lines, etc.
- Represent the built environment, including proportions, hierarchies, etc.
- Represent vegetation, including trees, shrubs, plant beds, ground surfaces, etc.
- Integrate people/figures into drawings and understand scale.
- Produce a rendering using light and shadow, with colour where appropriate.
- An assignment (50%): self-directed learning, consisting of 2 drawings to be submitted for each class for which a grade below 10/20 was obtained.
- An examination (50%).

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
Classes take place at Place Flagey, 19 / ULB Brussels.
Mondays from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
Classes may be held outdoors at locations chosen by the teacher, depending on requirements and opportunities.
