Learning unit contents

This seminar is organised into several chronological and thematic sections, the subjects of which change each year. In M1, each student is free to follow a section of their choice, which counts as Research Seminar I. In M2, they follow another section as part of Research Seminar II. Students are also required to choose at least one of their seminars to suit the problem and/or the period of their TFE, if necessary in consultation with their promoter. For this reason, students are encouraged to plan their cycle from M1 onwards.

Themes:

2026-2027

These topics will be presented during the Master's welcome meeting (14 September at 9 a.m.).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Whichever aspect is chosen, this seminar is designed to introduce students in the in-depth Master's programme in History to the scientific environment. They will have the opportunity to confront current research questions and practices in the field by attending or even participating in various scientific activities and by producing a critical essay themselves.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The theoretical knowledge acquired and the practical skills practised during the first cycle are assumed to have been acquired.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Learning activities may include :

  • Introductory theoretical sessions
  • Debates with guest specialists
  • Active participation in various scientific events (conferences, study days, symposia, etc.)
  • Reading of scientific articles (in French and other languages)
  • Educational excursions
  • Visits to Archives
  • ...

Continuous assessment

Further information:

This Research Seminar (5 ECTS) will be assessed on the basis of a written essay (max. 10 p. + any appendices), which may or may not be discussed orally, depending on the decision of the professor in charge of the Research Seminar.

Through this work, the student will demonstrate that he/she is capable of proposing a short critical essay related to the course theme, the fruit of personal reflection, which will be enriched by the sources and/or works commented on during the seminar, as well as any excursions and/or lectures proposed.

Active participation in the seminar sessions may be particularly valued and may be included in the final mark.

WARNING REGARDING GENERATIVE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (GenAI)

In order to ensure the acquisition of the historical skills specified in the learning objectives and in accordance with the institutional charter - which allows each degree programme to establish a more restrictive framework than the default framework it defines - the only permitted uses of a generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tool, subject to the explicit consent of the course lecturer and/or supervisor, are:

  • the use of GenAI for the purposes of formal language refinement, i.e. exclusively for spelling and grammatical correction, excluding any formulation or re-formulation;
  • the use of GenAI for the translation of modern languages;
  • the use of GenAI for the translation of ancient languages - solely in cases where no academic translation exists, and excluding exercises (in class or at home) and examination papers consisting specifically of translating a text from Latin or Ancient Greek, for which any use of GenAI is strictly prohibited;
  • the use of GenAI tools for palaeographic transcription and the transcription of interviews related to research work, including the final year project (TFE).
Any other use will result in a deferral. A voluntary, sincere and full admission of unauthorised use does not constitute grounds for avoiding this measure and does not remedy the irregularity.

As the use of an GenAI always entails the responsibility of the person using it, students must take full responsibility for any translation or correction they rely on and must duly disclose any such use of GenAI.

Furthermore, such use must always be approved in advance by the course lecturer and/or TFE supervisor and must be accompanied by a critical methodological note on the relevance and procedures for this technical use of an GenAI tool.

In any written work, the student must therefore declare on their honour, in an introductory note:

  • either that they have made no use of GenAI;
  • or that they have used it, strictly within the limits specified above.
