Learning unit contents
The 2026 Séminaire de muséologie will focus on the topic of 'small museums'. The aim will be to reflect on the logic behind the classification and categorisation of museums and how this has shaped museology, as well as how museums are analysed and perceived. This theme echoes many contemporary issues facing museums, particularly in relation to political considerations (the new ICOM definition, reform of the museum decree in the French Community of Belgium).
The seminar will draw on the lecturer's own research on this topic but will also feature presentations by researchers in museology, as well as museum visits involving discussions with museum professionals. The sessions will include debates and discussions between students and lecturers. The final programme will be announced at the start of the term.
The day of 13 May 2027 will be devoted to presenting the results of the seminar's work (and other projects) in the form of a study day.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The course aims to enable students to develop a critical understanding of contemporary issues facing museums.
By the end of this course, students will be able to carry out a critical analysis of a museum institution, drawing on bibliographical resources and archival documents, and summarising their findings in the form of an academic poster and a report.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Knowledge of museology and museum news, and regular visits to museums and exhibitions are highly recommended.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course alternates between ex cathedra presentations and time for debate, discussion and exchange with various participants, depending on the topicality of the issue.

The assessment involves the analysis of a 'small museum' and consists of:
- a research poster presented at the seminar on 13 May 2027 (30%)
- a report summarising the analysis, to be submitted during the examination period (70%)
