Learning unit contents

This year, the seminar will focus on protohistoric arts (Neolithic and Metal Ages).

It will examine the impact of the transition to a production-based economy on image-making, graphic expression, and symbolism in prehistoric societies.

By approaching the subject from various angles-notably those developed by Jacques Cauvin and Alain Testart-and drawing on recent archaeological data, the seminar will explore the nature and extent of the differences between the artistic output of prehistoric "hunter" populations (Paleolithic, Mesolithic) and "producer" populations (Neolithic). It will also address the relationship between these shifts in artistic production and other aspects of these societies, such as economic systems, social organization, and population dynamics. Finally, the seminar will examine the emergence of the imagery and symbolic systems that characterize the Metal Ages.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Drawing on data from archaeology and related disciplines, students will be encouraged to reflect on the formulation of hypotheses explaining major changes in so-called artistic production-shifting from the hunter-gatherer societies of the Paleolithic and Mesolithic to the food-producing societies of the Neolithic and the Metal Ages.

Students will also practise producing their own research work, presented in oral and/or written form, on a subject related to the theme addressed in this seminar, developing rigorous, reasoned and critical thinking.
