Learning unit contents
The course presents a survey of the English novel from the eighteenth to the beginning of the twentieth century.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The course aims to study the emergence of the novel as a new literary practice in the eighteenth century, its development throughout the nineteenth century, and the transformations it underwent in the twentieth century. We will focus particularly on the impact of this evolution, on the one hand, on the reader's expectations and interpretative strategies, and on the other hand, on the character as a mimetic projection, involving the evocation of expressivity, voice, and interiority.
The students will be introduced to a few key concepts of narrative theory, mainly those applying to character voice, and will be invited to test these tools on ten selected excerpts from novels of the period under study.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
A good command of English (reading, listening and speaking).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Two to three lectures and ten practical seminars.
Students are expected to have read and commented on the required readings for each seminar and to participate actively in seminar discussions.
