Learning unit contents
The GFEN project is a group project involving 3 to 4 students, supervised by one or more advisors. Two types of projects are offered:
- "Application"-type projects that address a practical question and culminate in the writing and defense of a report in the style of a "consulting firm" report;
- "Scientific" projects, which consist of research that may lead to the drafting of an article in accordance with the standards of scientific journals.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
This project aims to train students to manage a group project from conception through the presentation of results. Upon completion of this project, students will be able to:
- Organize their group work (decision-making, task allocation, coordination, knowledge sharing, meeting management, anticipating results, etc.);
- To apply the skills acquired during their bioengineering program (field data collection, surveys of key stakeholders, data analysis and modeling, etc.);
- To present the results of their work (in the form of a written report and an oral and visual presentation) and defend it before a panel of faculty members.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Completing the project puts into practice the skills acquired during the bioengineering program. The required knowledge depends on the subjects selected for the project.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Students develop and carry out their project together, with support from one or more project advisors, following a jointly defined work plan (internal meetings, technical and methodological support, field trips, meetings with institutions and key stakeholders, etc.). Students proactively coordinate the project and consult their advisors when needed.
Midway through the course, students present their project progress in French (context, methodology, available data, etc.), along with the expected results and their work plan. At this stage, a debriefing on group dynamics is organized with ULiège's Soft Skills Unit. Participation in this activity is mandatory.
A session to assist with writing a scientific article and a "consulting firm"-style report is scheduled during the semester.
At the end of the project (mid-December), students produce a final report in French or English (their choice), present it orally in English, and defend it in French before a panel of faculty members. All students are expected to be present throughout the day of the defenses.

The group project is evaluated collectively and is based on:
- 20% of the grade: an evaluation by the project supervisors of the group's performance throughout the project. The criteria used are: organization, quality of work, autonomy, and responsiveness;
- 30% of the grade: an evaluation of the written report by the course coordinators and the group's project supervisors;
- 50% of the grade: evaluation, by a panel of faculty members involved in supervising group projects, of the oral presentation and defense, taking into account both the substance and the quality of the oral communication.
- The panel of faculty members then deliberates on the resulting grade.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
In response to student suggestions via EVALENS and the GFEN Master's Program Academic Council, the following changes have been made to the course:
- Group size is limited to 3 or 4 students;
- The project defense in English has been replaced by a presentation in English only, and the Q&A session will be conducted in French to facilitate a smooth exchange;
- Examples of reports and presentations from previous projects that received high evaluations are provided at the beginning of the four-month term.
