Learning unit contents
This course unit aims to complement the training of future Physical Education and Health teachers by developing specific competencies related to safety, risk prevention, supervision, and intervention across various physical activity settings.
As part of this course unit, students undertake two specific training programmes:
- the BSSA (Brevet Supérieur de Sauvetage Aquatique - Advanced Aquatic Lifesaving Certificate), focusing on safety, supervision, and rescue in aquatic environments;
- the CATAGSAE (Certificat d'Aptitude Technique à l'Animation d'un Groupe sur Structure Artificielle d'Escalade - Technical Certificate for Group Supervision on Artificial Climbing Structures), focusing on safety and group supervision during climbing activities on artificial climbing structures.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Upon completion of this course unit, students will be able to:
- apply the knowledge and competencies developed through the BSSA and CATAGSAE training programmes;
- apply prevention and safety principles and procedures specific to the relevant physical activity settings;
- provide appropriate supervision and implement intervention and rescue procedures in aquatic environments;
- implement the safety principles required for the practice and supervision of group activities on artificial climbing structures;
- identify potentially hazardous situations and adopt appropriate behaviours to ensure their own safety and that of participants;
- meet the requirements for obtaining the certifications or certificates associated with both training programmes.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Any specific prerequisites for the BSSA and CATAGSAE training programmes will be communicated to students at the beginning of the academic year.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The learning activities primarily involve participation in the BSSA and CATAGSAE training programmes.
They include theoretical instruction, demonstrations, practical exercises, and scenario-based activities designed to support the acquisition and application of the knowledge, skills, and procedures specific to each training programme.
Particular emphasis is placed on risk prevention, participant safety, and students' ability to respond appropriately in the specific contexts of aquatic environments and artificial climbing structures.
