The theory module is structured as follows

Introduction (overview and objectives)
Coaching roles and physical and fitness trainer
Training principles
Organising a training session
Stretching
Motor skills development
Coordination and athletic fundamentals
Basics of aerobic exercise
Basics of strength training

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

Understand and explain the roles, knowledge and skills of a fitness coach
Understand and explain the key principles of training
Understand and explain the main aspects of physical training
Understand and explain the main guidelines for organising a training session (warm-up, main session and cool-down).
Understand and explain what coordination is, its link to motor learning, and how it is developed in a sporting context
Understand and explain the main stretching techniques and the contexts in which they are used
Understand and explain the fundamentals of athletics
Understand and explain the basic principles of exercise energetics and the fundamentals of aerobic exercise (fundamental concepts, their purpose, how to quantify exercise intensity, and different forms of exercise)
Understand the basic principles of strength training (muscle structure, types of contraction, adaptations to training, basic rules and the main associated strengthening and stretching exercises, including core strengthening)

Suggest a simple warm-up and/or the structure of a training session, tailored to a sporting context, in accordance with the rules covered in the course.

Students must be able to summarise in a structured manner and explain the topics covered in the course and presented in the slideshows.

Students must be able to illustrate, in schematic form, certain key concepts covered in the lectures
