Learning unit contents
The course "Factors Affecting Athletic Performance and Motor Learning" provides a comprehensive overview of the various factors that influence athletic performance. The material will be divided into six main chapters:
- Energy systems;
- Endurance;
- Strength-speed;
- Flexibility;
- Coordination and motor learning;
- Nutrition.
Identifying the determinants of performance is an essential step in the training process. It allows the coach to identify the elements on which they need to focus and to set priorities.
The practical course will provide concrete examples in the field of the concepts covered in the theoretical courses.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of the course, students should be familiar with:
the energy sources essential for human movement and how they are utilised depending on the duration and intensity of the exertion;
the various components of endurance and the factors that influence them;
the various components of strength and the factors that influence them;
the various components of speed and the factors that influence them;
the different components of flexibility and the factors that influence them;
the various skills related to coordination and motor learning;
the basic principles of sports nutrition.
During practical sessions, students will be given the opportunity to put the various concepts covered in the theory module into practice, in particular energy systems, speed, strength, agility, flexibility and mobility.
Two practical sessions will be devoted to sports nutrition before, during and after physical activity.
By the end of the course, students should be able to:
- identify the main factors determining performance across different sporting disciplines;
- quantify the relative importance of the different energy systems depending on the duration and intensity of the exertion;
- advise an athlete on managing their diet before, during and after exercise or competition.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
The Performance Factors course requires some basic knowledge of chemistry and general physics, as well as a basic understanding of the main sports disciplines. This course is itself a prerequisite for the courses "Fundamentals of Training" and "Training Conceptualization."
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Associated theoretical and practical lectures
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face course
Additional information:
Theoretical and practical courses are organized face to face. Some work will be done at home.
Course materials and recommended or required readings
The slideshows presented during the year will be published online on the MyUlg portal. They constitute the main support but they must be completed by the information given in the theoretical course.
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )
Written work / report
Continuous assessment
Further information:
The theoretical evaluation takes place in the form of a written exam with closed and open answers.
Some questions are sometimes written by visiting teachers (food). In this case, they also correct their questions. Other questions are written and corrected by the incumbent and / or the assistant.
The practical evaluation is carried out on several criteria:
-the level of performance posted throughout the year;
-the percentage of attendance at the course;
-motivation
-The behaviour
-Tracking in the TP book
The theoretical score accounts for 70% of the points. The practical mark for 30%. A score lower than 9/20 in one of the two parts leads to a final score of less than 9/20.
A attendance rate of less than 70% for practical courses automatically implies a score of less than 9/20.
