Learning unit contents
Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry focuses on the separation of the constituents of a sample, their identification, and the determination of their respective quantities. Quantitative analytical measurements play a vital role in many areas of industry and research, both in pharmacy and in other disciplines. Many analysts devote a considerable part of their time to collecting quantitative information on sometimes very complex samples under study. Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry is therefore an indispensable tool for the investigative work of researchers across a wide range of sectors (chemical, biomedical, pharmaceutical, etc.).
The teaching of Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry thus forms a fundamental component of the Bachelor's program in Pharmaceutical Sciences. It is structured around the life cycle of analytical procedures, i.e., the problem-solving process that covers the entire analytical pathway followed by a sample, from its source to the final result.
This approach will enable students to understand how to select and implement an analytical technique appropriate for addressing a simple problem in the pharmaceutical field.
In this second part of the course, the focus will be on separation techniques. Students' analytical training, both theoretical and practical, will be further developed through the Practical Sessions in Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry (CHIM9333).
The contents of this second part of the course are as follows:
- Introduction to Separation Techniques
- Chromatography and fundamental parameters
- Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC)
- High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
- Gas Chromatography (GC)
- Supercritical Fluid Chromatography (SFC)
- Capillary Electrophoresis (CE)
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Pharmaceutical Expertise
- Understand the importance of pharmaceutical analytical chemistry in the quality control of raw materials.
- Understand the operating principles of the analytical techniques covered in the course.
- Identify the physicochemical properties of a pharmaceutical molecule that influence the selection of an analytical technique for a given analysis.
- Understand the sensitivity (limit of detection) of the analytical techniques covered in the course.
- Understand the terminology related to analytical method validation (accuracy, precision, repeatability, etc.).
- Develop critical analytical thinking skills.
- Apply formulas related to fundamental analytical parameters.
- Be able to generate quantitative results from data obtained through external standard calibration, external calibration involving the addition of an internal standard, and the standard addition method.
- Communicate in an integrated and relevant manner about an analytical technique covered in the course.
- Understand the "green" dimension of an analytical method.
- Understand the value of using an internal standard to reduce sources of error (risk management).
- Understand the importance of normalization in reducing sources of error (risk management).
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
- Preparatory Chemistry for Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
- Physical and Mathematical Foundations of Biomedical Sciences.
Whenever possible, and in order to ensure consistency with the intended pedagogical design of the programme, students are strongly advised to enroll in both the theoretical lectures and the practical sessions of Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry within the same Individual Study Plan (ISP).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Lectures are ex-cathedra.
Short video sequences and demonstrations will illustrate the theoretical concepts and understanding will be directly evaluated using the interactive Wooclap platform.
Lectures during Q4.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face course
Course materials and recommended or required readings
Platform(s) used for course materials:
- eCampus
Further information:
All lecture and seminar notes will be available on the eCampus platform.
General references (recommended reading): Analyse Chimique: Méthodes et techniques instrumentales modernes (10th edition); Rouessac, Dunod, 2025. Mémo visuel de Chimie Analytique; Bourderioux, Bourjot, Lordel-Madelaine, Valois, Dunod, 2020."
The acquisition of these textbooks is not compulsory. Active participation in the course together with the notes available on the pleteform, will be sufficient. However, these books may provide additional explanations, often presented from a different perpective. They are available at the "Sciences de la vie" library (CHU-Sart-Tilman).
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
written exam AND oral exam
Further information:
Written and oral evaluation.
Additional information:
A remedial oral examination is organized only during the first session for students who obtained a grade equal to or higher than 8.00/20 and lower than 10.00/20 on the written exam. Registration in advance is required to take this remedial oral examination.
Work placement(s)
Internship opportunity.
Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
Student assistant : opportunities are given to students interested in teaching of Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry. The work mainly consists of supervising pratical activities.
Research: outside class and exam periods (from the end of the second year of the Bachelor in Pharmaceutical Sciences), students interested in Pharmaceutical Analytical Chemistry can participate in an internship in the laboratory (student-researchers). PhD degrees can subsequently be prepared in the laboratory.
