Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The techniques involved in the immune response of animal and plant cells will be applied in the practical part of the course. The student will be put in a real situation requiring the implementation of different techniques relating to immunology such as, for example, the purification of immune cells, their analysis by flow cytometry and titration of antibodies, for animal cells. For plants, various techniques will be employed to measure early events, signaling, and gene expression associated with the activation of the immune response. These approaches will be complemented by targeted experiments using protoplasts, liposomes (biomimetic membranes), and/or native plasma membranes to test the interaction of immunogenic molecules with the lipid platform that plays a key role in perception.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Upon completion of this module, students should be able to integrate various theoretical and practical approaches based on their knowledge of immunology.
This course aims to:
- learn a range of methods (transcriptomic, biochemical, biophysical, enzymatic, and antibody-antigen interactions) for measuring the immune response in the broad sense.
- leverage knowledge of fundamental immunology to understand: i) therapeutic strategies for inflammatory, cancerous, and infectious diseases; and ii) strategies for the biological control of plant diseases (using bio-based ingredients) by stimulating the plants' immune potential.
- acquire the skills required for careers in biotechnology and biotherapy.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Prerequisite:
CHIM9321-1 - Immunologie
BIOL 2015-3 - Biologie moléculaire
CHIM0716-1 - Du gène à la protéine
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The practical work will address the principles of animal and plant immunology in an integrated manner. Students are invited to carefully read the documents which will be made available before the practicals, to take notes and to write a report about their experiments. This report will include a synthesis of the basic principles, the results and a discussion.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face course
Further information:
Assistance at the laboratory experiments is mandatory.
If the number of students is below or equal to 3, the program will be adapted. The students will participate to experiments related to immunology ongoing in the laboratory under the supervision of a researcher.
Course materials and recommended or required readings
Platform(s) used for course materials:
- eCampus
Further information:
The experimental protocols and slides presented during the practical sessions will be provided. A reference book (Immunology by J.Kuby, Eds Dunod) and scientific papers (reviews) can be consulted optionally in order to improve the understanding of principles of the different techniques and the foundations of the principles of immunology.
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
written exam AND oral exam
Written work / report
Additional information:
Analysis of the results obtained during the practicals and writing of a report
Work placement(s)
Part of the experiments requires analyzes and trainings performed at the GIGA (Sart-Tilman).
