Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
These laboratory sessions focus on the experimental study of the synthesis of inorganic solids, as well as their crystal structure characterization.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The lab sessions are an initiation to research work.
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Find and analyse synthesis procedures reported in the literature in terms of the mechanisms involved in synthesis processes of inorganic solids;
- Understand and justify synthesis conditions, including role of reactants and additives, pH, temperature, ...
- adapt or criticize synthesis procedures to fit with time and material constraints
- discuss (micro)structural data obtained on the resulting samples
- establish the links with the theoretical course ( CHIM0760-1 )
- Define an experimental strategy
- organize team work, define an objective
- track experimental data, fill in a labbook
- communicate within the group and towards the class and the teachers
- write down a scientific report in the form of a paper
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
- CHIM0760-1 needs to be taken during the same or a previous academic year
- experimental and understanding skills at the level of a laboratory course in analytical chemistry of aqueous solutions (including lab safety) -
- For students with a lack of experimental work in their past cursus, and to ensure everyone's safety, these skills may be assessed during a test at the beginning of the first lab session. Badly failing this test may result in not being allowed to particpate in the hands-on practical work.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The laboratory sessions consist in a group project based on a family of compounds. Each group will have the opportunity to research operating procedures, carry out syntheses, and characterize products, while also being assigned an aspect to explore in more detail.
The results obtained during the laboratory sessions will be compiled and discussed in a collective article . Throughout the laboratory sessions, students will be supervised so that they can gradually gain autonomy in the various aspects of the project: understanding of phenomena, experimental implementation, and communication skills (written and oral).
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face course
Further information:
Face-to-face course
labcoat and safety glasses are mandatory
Course materials and recommended or required readings
Platform(s) used for course materials:
- eCampus
Written work / report
Continuous assessment
Further information:
The lab sessions are organized only once a year.
Attendance to all laboratory sessions is mandatory.
Students failing to attend several laboratory sessions without a valid reason will receive a global score of 0/20. Specific cases must be discussed with the teachers.
There is no exam durng the session.
The final grade will be determined based on:
- attitude and work completed during laboratory sessions ( individual note-70%)
- paper writing, according to the criteria detailed on e-campus (collective note-30%)
Second session:
In case of failingto submit a satisfying written report, a new version may be required in second session. The individual note relative to the attitude durng the lab sessions will be unchanged.
Work placement(s)
Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
Séances de laboratoire : on Thursdays and Fridays during first 4 weeks of 2nd quadrimestre. Attendance to lab sessions is compulsory.
