Learning unit contents
The teaching unit "Placement in Professional Environments" immerses students at the heart of the construction site, where the architectural project becomes matter. Drawing on the table of the architect's full mission established by the Ordre des Architectes, it covers phases E, F and G, from the preparation of the contractor consultation file to the execution of the works - precisely the moment when constructive choices take shape: specifications, detailed quantity surveys and technical requirements on one side, monitoring of progress, site meetings and reports, handovers and the subsequent works file on the other. Manufacturer visits enrich this immersion by opening the doors upstream of the construction site: they show how materials and building systems come into being, reveal their manufacturing and installation constraints, and help students understand the thread linking a technical choice made at the design stage to its concrete realisation on site. Through this dual experience - site and factory - students become familiar with the real practice of the architect's tasks, between legal duties and good practices recommended by the profession.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Part 1 - Link with the competency framework
Implement a situated spatial response
- Identify the phases and actions required for implementation
- Adapt structural, technical and material choices to match the project's principles and values
- Manage the economic impact of decisions made throughout the process
- Experiment with feasibility, implementation, arrangement and assembly methods, and construction processes as design parameters
- Draw on local resources (materials, energy sources, etc.) (new ? manufacturer visits)
- Work within interdisciplinary teams, adopting a position suited to one's level of expertise
- Master verbal, written and graphic languages as tools for sharing ideas
- Develop a reflective approach to one's own activity
- Grasp the meaning of expectations through attentive, understanding listening
Part 2 - The learning outcomes of the teaching unit
By the end of the teaching unit, students will be able to:
- Write construction-site visit reports in accordance with professional standards;
- Solve case studies, focusing on material-selection criteria and the importance of complying with best practice;
- Explain the manufacturing processes and implementation constraints of the materials and building systems discovered during manufacturer visits, linking them to the technical choices made at the design stage; (new)
- Recall and draw on knowledge gained from lectures and visits (construction sites, manufacturers, companies) to analyse a concrete construction situation;
- Identify and describe the execution phases of a construction site based on direct observation.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The teaching unit "Placement in Professional Environments" is built around the following educational activities, among others:
- Theory lectures in large groups. For each theory session, students must bring their laptop and smartphone in order to complete in-session work and end-of-day assignments;
- Visits to construction sites, material manufacturers and built architecture. All construction-site and manufacturer visits will be organised by the course lecturers;
For company visits, travel is by coach over full days; visit groups (50 students) are formed during the first quadrimester via eCampus.
?? For construction-site and company visits, you must wear the mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): helmet, high-visibility vest and safety shoes. You must also bring a spare pair of shoes to keep the coach clean. Access to the coach for company visits and to construction-site visits will be refused in case of non-compliance.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face course
Further information:
Attendance at all course sessions is mandatory.
Access to the evaluation is contingent upon attending all sessions and submitting all interim assignments.
Course materials and recommended or required readings

Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire )
Written work / report
Out-of-session test(s)
Further information:
Attendance at course sessions is mandatory. Access to assessment is conditional on attendance at all sessions, construction-site visits and company visits, and on submission of all interim assignments. Medical certificates must be submitted on eCampus no later than 6 p.m. on the day of the session concerned. No medical certificate will be accepted if sent by email.
- Work to be submitted 40 %
- Site-visit reports to be written according to the number of visits
- Written exam during the session 60 %
- Case studies to be completed according to the number of companies visited
- Questions on the content of all sessions and visits
A maximum shortfall of two points is tolerated across all parts of the assessment, whether concentrated in a single part or spread across several parts, for a cumulative total of two points. Beyond this, the student fails the entire teaching unit and is awarded a mark of 7/20. In the event of failure in the first session, the student must retake all assessments in the second session, including any parts already passed in the first session.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
Students should stay informed about session times and deadlines for assignments through emails, announcements, and information on eCampus.
They must pay particular attention to the schedules related to the different groups.
For each theoretical session, students are required to bring their laptop and smartphone to complete ongoing tasks during the session and for end-of-day assignments. Students who do not have a personal laptop should inform the instructors to find the most suitable solution.
PPE, spare shoes, and CST will be checked before each visit. Access to the bus will be denied if any of these requirements are not met.
