Learning unit contents

This course is a teaching of digital visual culture combining training in 2D and 3D drawing techniques and digital image manipulation with lessons in visual culture and image education.

It focuses on the reconstruction of an interior view of a domestic space that was never built or has since been destroyed, with a view to producing a personal interpretation of it. This year, the reference subject is an exhibition that marked the reflection on domesticity in the 1980s: Il Progetto Domestico, presented at the Triennale di Milano in 1986, curated by Mario Bellini and Georges Teyssot.

Content of the drawing techniques training

2D modeling:

  • Introduction to the principles of vector drawing and the basics of 2D modeling (types of lines, types of objects, modeling tools, modification tools, etc.)Local and global digital coordinate systems
  • Introduction to good practices of 2D modeling (XREF, layers, blocks, groups, etc.)
  • Mastery of CAD representation and printing tools (pens, formats, etc.) and compliance of representations with trade standards
3D modeling:

  • Introduction to the basics of 3D representation and its main tools (geometric primitives, Boolean operations, surface modeling, etc.)
  • Introduction to good practices of 3D modeling (layers, blocks, groups, etc.)
  • Introduction to the basics of synthetic image production (light settings, texture, cameras, etc.) from an existing 3D model to produce simple synthetic images
Image manipulation:

  • Introduction to the principles of collage and the basics of digital image manipulation (layers, masks, selections, transformation tools, retouching, etc.)
  • Introduction to image formats and resolution, and to the issues involved in selecting and managing iconographic sources
  • Creation of a digital collage based on existing references with a view to a personal interpretation

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course the student will be able to:

  • Read and transcribe a represented space, drawing on a critical reading of the reference, a faithful reconstruction in plan and elevation, and a personal interpretation through image manipulation
  • Build a repertoire of representations and visual references, being exposed to different forms of representation and knowing how to choose the most appropriate one
  • Choose the digital strategy adapted to the intended use, knowing a wide range of tools with their advantages and disadvantages, the student will gain a critical and proactive look at these tools for his studio work
  • Produce a 2D representation of a simple project compliant with the representation codes of the discipline
  • Define 3D modeling objectives adapted to a specific project situation and produce a model that conforms to these modeling objectives

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Erasmus students are welcome.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Each week 2 hours of Lab

Learning methods:

  • Note-taking and transcription, by hand and on the computer
  • Practical exercises based on short technical tutorial videos (capsules)
  • Theoretical lectures and bibliography
  • Peer exchange

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Blended learning

Further information:

The course is taught in French.

The course materials (exercises, videos, bibliography, etc.) are published on ecampus.

Depending on the schedule, some practical work sessions are given in an "hybrid" mode. In this case, the content necessary for the lab is given in advance, work can be done remotely from home and teachers and assistants are available at given schedule for one-to-one support (answers to questions, additional explanations, etc.).
