Learning unit contents
The Master's thesis may take the form of an empirical research project, based on the collection and analysis of data to address one or more questions derived from a defined research problem, or of a literature review, grounded in the identification, selection, and critical analysis of scientific publications in order to synthesize existing knowledge on a given topic. In both cases, the work entails the formulation of objectives and/or hypotheses, the justified selection of data collection and analysis methods, as well as the interpretation of results in relation to existing knowledge.
The process culminates in the production of a written report and a public oral defense, including the student's presentation of the work and a question-and-answer session with a jury composed of at least three members, including the supervisor.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The Master's thesis is intended to introduce the student to the design and implementation of a scientific research project. It constitutes training both in and through research, drawing on recognized methods and tools within the relevant field, as well as on the competencies acquired throughout the program.
The student is expected to design a coherent scientific approach, to meet the standards of scholarly work in terms of methodological rigor, data processing, critical analysis, and adherence to research ethics. They must also demonstrate the ability to produce original work, formalized in a written report and a public oral defense.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Validation of credits for the Preparatory Research Work (TPR), for students in the transitional program, or for the course Thesis Preparation: Project Design and Research Ethics (PAM), for students enrolled in the new program, is a prerequisite for undertaking the Master's thesis.

Across all examination sessions.
The Master's thesis consists of:
- The submission of a personal and original written document.
- An oral defense with a maximum duration of one hour (including the jury's deliberation). The student has 10 minutes to present the thesis orally. This presentation must be concise and focus mainly on the empirical part of the work, including a brief contextualization of the research question, the methods used, the main results, and their interpretation. The presentation is followed by a question-and-answer session with the jury.
The thesis is evaluated on two separate components:
- The written report (50% of the final grade).
- The oral defense (50% of the final grade).
Work placement(s)
Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
Confirmation of the thesis topic must be completed no later than December 15 of the academic year in which the thesis is undertaken, via a form available on the Faculty intranet (https://intranet.fplse.uliege.be) under Teaching ? Complete my Master's thesis form. The student is responsible for filling out the online form, ensuring that its content has been approved by the supervisor, and checking the box confirming that they have read the agreement relating to the completion of a thesis. The supervisor must then provide electronic validation of the form no later than December 15.
Theses must be submitted exclusively through the MaTheO platform: in December for the January session, in May for the June session, or in August for the September session. For each session, the precise submission date is set at the beginning of the year and published in the Faculty calendar, available on the student portal of the Faculty website under Resources ? Academic Calendar.
