Learning unit contents
part III
The Special Histology of Domestic Animals course aims to describe the various healthy organs of the animal organism from microscopic and functional points of view. The main function of an organ is governed by the function of the predominant tissue that constitutes it. The organs themselves are integrated into systems that perform the major functions of the organism.
The endocrine, nervous, skin, osteoarticular, respiratory, urinary and reproductive systems will be studied during this part of the course.
part IV
The course of special histology of domestic animals aims at describing the various healthy organs of the animal organism from microscopic and functional points of view. Functions of any organs depend on the properties of constitutive tissues. The organs are integrated in systems ensuring the good functions of the organism.
The digestive system and its associated glands, lymphoid and sensory systems will be studied during this part of the course.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
part III
Knowledge
The objective of the theoretic course is to teach the students the morphological and functional features of the different organs according to the studied species.
Knowhow
Starting from a pure descriptive approach the student will have to be able to establish a relationship between the examined morphology and the function of the cell, the tissue and mainly the organ being studied.
Soft skills
The opportunity of observing virtual histological preparations on eCampus offer the possibility to the students to work in groups, exchange different point of view, acquire critical spirit, and stimulate mutual aid.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
part III
Objectives:
At the end of the practical sessions, students will be able to identify and describe, on histological preparations of the various healthy organs covered in the theoretical classes, the cellular morphology, tissue organisation, location of these different tissues and their interrelationships within the organs, regardless of the histological staining used. They will also be able to establish the relationships between the histological/cytological structures observed and their functions.
The aim of these sessions is to prepare students for the Master 2 practical work in Systemic Pathology.
Organisation:
Passing a prerequisite test with a mark of 70/100 is a condition for access to the first practical work session. This test is available online on eCampus (compulsory formative tests).
The practical work sessions are divided into three themed weeks in Q1 and three weeks in Q2:
- Q1 - Week 1: Endocrine, nervous and skin systems
- Q1 - Week 2: Osteoarticular and respiratory systems
- Q1 - Week 3: Urinary and reproductive systems
The first two sessions of the week in Q1 are organised remotely (online): A learning pathway including digitised histological slides, explanatory videos on the subject and practical work materials are available in the EU's eCampus space. A formative assessment must be passed at the end of each online session with a minimum mark of 14/20. This mark determines access to the next session, including face-to-face sessions. The two online sessions must be validated by 11 a.m. on the day of session 3 at the latest. If one of these sessions is not validated within the specified time frame, the student will be considered absent from that session and will be denied access to the face-to-face sessions.
Sessions 3 and 4 take place in person in the microscopy room. These two sessions are formative. Session 3 consists of a 'question and answer' section on the material covered remotely, followed by a 'histological and cellular structure identification exercises using an optical microscope' section supervised by assistants and student tutors.
Session 4 is an active review of the material covered during the week in the form of an oral exam simulation (identification, description, structure-function relationships, link to theoretical material). A general assessment and feedback will be given to the students interviewed. Although session 4 is formative, the teacher reserves the right to shorten the session if the group of students present does not meet the minimum learning requirements for the exercise.
Completion of the online sessions, validated by a formative assessment (minimum 14/20), and active participation in the face-to-face sessions are compulsory for all students, including those repeating the EU.
Any absence from face-to-face sessions must be justified by a medical certificate or other valid official document and sent by email to the secretary of the Department of Morphology-Pathology at the following address: Nathalie.Guillaume@uliege.be
Failure to validate the online sessions within the allotted time, i.e. before 11 a.m. on the day of session 3, will be considered an absence. Similarly, any unjustified absence or late arrival at face-to-face sessions will be penalised.
Students with more than two absences (in total for the two terms), not justified by a valid medical certificate or not made up at a later date (in consultation with the assistants) will be refused access to the Histology practical exam in June.
part IV
Objectives:
At the end of the practical work sessions (TP), the student will be able to identify and describe, on histological preparations of the various healthy organs discussed during the theoretical courses, cell morphology, tissue organization, the location of these different tissues and their interrelationships within the organs, regardless of the histological staining used. He/she will also be able to discuss the relationships between the observed histological/cytological structures and their functions.
These practical work sessions are intended to prepare the student for the practical work sessions in Systemic Pathology given during the second year of master.
Organization:
The practical sessions are divided into three themed weeks in Q2
- Q2 - Week 1: The digestive system and its accessory glands
- Q2 - Week 2: The lymphatic system and sensory system
- Q2 - Week 3: Preparatory exercises for the oral examination (only two sessions).
The first three sessions of the week in Q2 are organised remotely (online):
A learning pathway comprising digitised histological slides, explanatory videos on the subject matter and practical work materials is available on the eCampus platform.
Sessions 4 and 5 take place in person in the microscopy room. Session 4 consists of a 'question and answer' section on the material covered remotely, followed by a 'histological and cellular structure identification exercises under an optical microscope' section supervised by assistants and student tutors.
Session 5 is an active review of the material covered during the week in the form of an oral exam simulation (identification, description, structure-function relationships, link to theoretical material). A general assessment and feedback will be given to the students interviewed. Although session 4 is formative, the teacher reserves the right to shorten the session if the group of students present does not meet the minimum learning requirements for the exercise.
Completion of the online sessions, validated by a formative assessment (minimum 14/20), and attendance at the face-to-face sessions are compulsory for all students, including repeat students.
Similarly, any unjustified absence or tardiness to in-person sessions will be penalised.
Students with more than two absences (in total for the two terms), not justified by a valid medical certificate or not made up at a later date (in consultation with the assistants) will be denied access to the June Histology practical exam.

part III
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )
Further information:
The VETE2114 course is a combination of two parts:
- Part 1 : Histology of AD 3, in Q1, the theoretical part of which will be assessed in January in the form of a written examination and the practical part of which will be assessed in June in the form of an oral examination.
- Partim 2: Histology of AD 4, in Q2, the theoretical part of which will be assessed in June in the form of a written examination and the practical part of which will be assessed in June in the form of an oral examination.
- Q1 theoretical part examination = 35%
- Q2 theoretical part examination = 25%.
-
Q2 practical part examination (Q1+Q2) = 40%
January session:
During the January session, only the theoretical course material covered in Q1 will be assessed by a written examination consisting of open-ended questions, diagrams to produce, diagrams to label and/or multiple-choice questions.
The practical part of Q1 will not be assessed during the January session but will be assessed in full during the June session and will cover the material covered in the Q1 and Q2 practicals.
Notes:
1/ If the student obtains a mark lower than 10/20 for the Q1 examination, he/she will not be able to retake this part in June.
2/ There is no absorbing mark. The final examination mark will be the sum of each part, even in the event of a serious failure in one part.
September session
If the student does not pass the VETE2114 course during the June deliberation, they may benefit from a grade carryover for the part(*) of the overall assessment for which they obtained a grade equal to or higher than 14/20. They will therefore not have to retake this part in the September exam.
(*) i.e. the theoretical part of Q1, the theoretical part of Q2 and/or the practical part: Q1+Q2 subject assessed in Q2.
This grade carryover will be done automatically unless the student submits a written request to Ms Toppets, indicating that they wish to retake all three parts of the exam in September.
part IV
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions ) AND oral exam
Further information:
Written assessment for the theoretical part
Oral assessment for the practical parts (Q1 + Q2)
Additional explanations:
The UE VETE2114 course is a combination of two parts:
- Part 1 : Histology of AD 3, in Q1, the theoretical part of which will be assessed in January in the form of a written examination and the practical part of which will be assessed in June in the form of an oral examination.
- Part 2: Histology of AD 4, in Q2, the theoretical part of which will be assessed in June in the form of a written examination and the practical part of which will be assessed in June in the form of an oral examination.
- Q1 theoretical part examination = 35%
- Q2 theoretical part examination = 25%.
- Q2 practical part examination (Q1+Q2) = 40%
June session:
The theoretical part will be assessed in the form of a written examination consisting of open-ended questions with long or short answers.
The practical work examination is an oral examination. Students will be required to identify cells, tissues and organs on four histological preparations:
- 1 physical slide from partim Histo 3 (Q1), examined under an optical microscope
- 1 physical slide from partim Histo 4 (Q2), examined under an optical microscope
- 2 'mystery' slides from the Cytomine collection on computer, given on the day of the examination.
Students must be able to link their theoretical and practical knowledge. Simply recognising organs is not sufficient to pass.
Remarks:
1/ There is no absorbing mark. The final examination mark will be the sum of each part, even in the event of a serious failure in one part.
August session:
If the student does not pass UE VETE2114 during the June deliberation, he/she may benefit from a grade carryover for the part(*) of the overall assessment for which he/she obtained a grade equal to or higher than 14/20. He/she will therefore not have to retake this part in the September examination.
(*) i.e. the theoretical part of Q1, the theoretical part of Q2 and/or the practical part: Q1+Q2 subject assessed in Q2.
This carryover of marks will be done automatically unless the student submits a written request to Ms Toppets, indicating that they wish to retake all three parts of the September exam.
The second session exam will cover the two parts in the same way as the first session, with the same distribution of marks.
