This course introduce socio-economic aspects involved in the organisation of poultry, rabbit and pig productions with an impact on animal health management.
Basic theoretical course for all vet students on main diseases of poultry and production rabbits.
The course is dedicated to poultry and production rabbits: clinical examinations in poultry houses and rabbitries, importance of management, differential diagnosis and prevention of main diseases (respiratory, digestive, nervous, reproductive, immune deficiencies, ...), vaccination schemes and the various pathologies according to their major tropisms. This is a basic course for all vet students not a specialisation course.
Concerning pigs, this course will describe the main diseases of the gastrointestinal, respiratory, nervous and urogenital systems and diseases of the mammary gland and skin. These pathologies of bacterial, viral and/or parasitic origin are presented as differential diagnoses associated to the production stages they affect: suckling or weaned piglets, fattening/growing pigs and/or breeding pigs. The approach proposed in this course for resolving clinical cases is based on ecopathology, which studies the factors favouring rearing diseases of multifactorial origin and/or affecting productivity or product quality. Preventive solutions and treatments that take into account the AMCRA recommendations, fighting antibiotic resistance, are described.
The lecture of Genetic will focus on pigs as well as one the three hours of Socio-economy.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course students will be able
-to understand and discuss major socio-economic issues related to poultry, rabbit and pig productions.
- to make a differential diagnosis, to determine complementary examinations and to set up a treatment for common diseases of poultry and production rabbits;
- to determine how and when to refer complex cases.
To be able to recognize the main diseases of pigs and to propose a differential diagnosis based on the main clinical signs reported. To determine risk factors, complementary examinations, treatment and prevention measures. To know basics in pig genetics. And be aware of the economic impact of certain diseases and the importance of preventing or controlling them.

Basic knowledge of bird anatomy, physiology, etc. (bachelor subjects - without specifying specific teaching units) are essential prerequisites that may be covered in the exam. In order to enable students to update and/or supplement their knowledge in these areas, reference materials will be made available on eCampus.

Please note, virtual visits to poultry and rabbit farms are planned during the week of the Poultry, Rabbit, Pigeon and Preventive Clinic VETE2085-D-a. These visits must be integrated into the course on Health management of monogastric production animals, including poultry / rabbits, because they allow a better understanding of the epidemiology, treatment, ... of many pathologies.

Socio-économics : 3 hours face-to-face and/or distance-learning.
Genetic counseling (Pig medicine) : 1 hour face-to-face and/or distance-learning.
A total of 12 hours on-campus and/or distance-learning theoretical course (6 hours for Poultry and rabbits + 6 hours for pigs). Students are advised to actively take part at theoretical course especially during guided film presentation.

Poultry and rabbits : it may be required to read scientific papers and/or book section (1 per year maximum) which references will be given during the course. There may have some questions on this reading at the time of examination.

Please note, the virtual visits to poultry and rabbit farms integrated into the week of Poultry, Rabbit, Pigeon and Preventive Clinic VETE2085-D-a will be the subject of specific questions during the examination of the course VETE2083-A-a Health Management monogastric animals. All the required information can be found on ecampus in the teachnig unit 2025-2026-VETE2085-D-a - Clinique des animaux de production, Clinique avicole, cunicole, colombophile et préventive, 17,5h Cl - Fichier « mardi - visites virtuelles d'élevage ».
