Learning unit contents
Part II
The course of general histology of domestic animals aims at describing the various healthy tissues of the animal organism. These tisssues are integrated in organs ensuring the great functions of the organism.
General and particular connective tissues, muscular, nervous tissues, blood and lymph vessels and blood cells will be approached during the second quadrimester. Their structural, ultrastructural and functional characteristics will be approached.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Part II
Theoretical course:
Knowledge
The objective of the theoretical course is to teach students about the morphological and functional characteristics of the various tissues mentioned above.
Know-how
Starting from a purely descriptive approach, students must be able to establish a relationship between the morphology observed and the function of the cells and tissues that make up the organ they are studying.
Interpersonal skills
The availability of virtual histological slides on the eCampus platform allows students to work in groups, exchange their points of view, develop critical thinking skills, and encourage mutual support.
Observation
The online test must be completed by the agreed date and modalities.
This test is formative.
It can be paused and resumed at any time.
This test determines access to the exam.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Part II
No prerequisites other than a good knowledge of basic biological concepts.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Part II
Theoretical concepts will be taught during the second quadrimester.
Practical histology II sessions (TP) will be organized during the second quadrimester to complement the theoretical course.
Objectives of the practical sessions
At the end of the practical sessions, students should be able to identify and describe the cellular morphology and tissue organization of the different tissues that make up a healthy animal organism, regardless of the histological staining used. They will also be able to establish the relationships between the histological/cytological structures observed and their functions.
General organisation:
The Histology practical sessions in the second semester are compulsory and are organized in a hybrid format.
Sessions working on scanned slides are organized remotely or in person, at the student's discretion. In practical terms, students can complete the online learning modules remotely or go to the microscopy lab, where they will be supervised by a teaching student (one teaching student per group of students present). There will be no attendance check, but the slide work must be validated using an online questionnaire with a score of at least 14/20 in order to access the next session and attend the in-person sessions. Failure to validate an online session before the "feedback session" is equivalent to an unjustified absence.
Only sessions entitled "Review + questioning," "Rehearsals," and "Blood smears" will be held exclusively in person.
Attendance to these sessions is mandatory.
Repeat students may participate in practical sessions, but must inform those in charge of their decision to participate or not.
Organization of sessions:
The practical work sessions are divided into three thematic weeks:
- Week 1: Connective tissue and muscle tissue
- Week 2: Vascular and nervous tissue and blood cells
- Week 3: Preparatory exercises for the practical work oral exam
- Sessions 1 and 2:
In the eCampus course space, students have access to a learning path that includes histological slides digitized in Cytomine, explanatory videos on the subject, and practical work materials.
Students must identify and annotate the tissues, cells, and histological structures of interest on the digitized slides and/or build a personal image bank. The annotation layers on the digitized slides may be checked by teaching assistants for feedback purposes. The session will be considered as complete upon validation of a formative test available in the eCampus online space. Two of the skills targeted by this program are autonomy and self-assessment.
- Session 3:
The first hour and a half will be devoted to any remaining questions about the online work and to completing the annotation of the digitized slides.
The last half hour will be devoted to an online certification test (see below) on the theoretical and practical material covered during the week of practical work.
- Session 4:
Session 4 is an active review of the material covered during the week in the form of a formative oral exam (identification, description, structure-function relationships, links to theoretical material), supervised by Professor L. Grobet and his assistants. A general assessment and feedback will be given to the students who are examined.
Week 2 of practical work is organized as follows:
During week 2, a fifth session is devoted to performing blood smears. It takes place in person and, like all other in-person sessions, is mandatory.
Absences and supporting documents:
Any absence or late arrival for practical classes must be justified before the start of the class by email sent to the secretary of the Department of Morphology-Pathology at the following address: Nathalie.Guillaume@uliege.be).
A valid medical certificate or any other official certificate/attestation is required to justify the absence. Students may be refused entry to the theory exam if they have more than one unjustified absences during the second quadrimester sessions.

Exam(s) during the session
The following applies to all sessions.
The theoretical assessment consists of:
- certification tests organized prior to three practical work sessions,
- and a written exam in person in the form of multiple-choice questions and/or open-ended questions.
The practical part is assessed during an in-person written exam.
Additional explanations:
During semesters 1 (Histology I) and 2 (Histology II):
Three certification tests are organized in person using online tools (multiple-choice questions, true/false questions, matching tests, diagrams to label, etc.) during the first in-person practical work session of the following weeks:
- Week 2 of quadrimester 1. This week covers the theory of epithelial lining and glandular epithelia.
- Week 1 of quadrimester 2: This covers the theory of connective tissue and muscle tissue.
- Week 2 of quadrimester 2: This covers the theory of nervous tissue, blood and lymphatic vessels, and blood cells.
End-of-quadrimester assessment (first session):
- The assessment of the theoretical part consists of a written exam including multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, and diagrams to be labeled. This assessment accounts for 50% of the overall grade.
- The practical assessment consists of a written exam, based on observation of histological slides in a digitalized format and/or on a microscopeThe student should be able to comment and identify cells, tissues, and vessels on the histological preparations that may - or may not - have been observed during the Q1 and Q2 practical sessions.
Simply identifying tissues is not sufficient to pass: students must be able to apply their theoretical and practical knowledge. The grade obtained in the practical exam accounts for 40% of the final mark.
In the second session (third quadrimester), the exam procedures and the distribution of points remain the same. Points from tests taken during the year will also be taken into account the same way.
