Learning unit contents
The main objective of the Professional Determination Internship course (Part I, II, and III) is to support the development of your professional identity through active and reflective immersion in various work environments. This approach is realized through two observation and practical internships, offering you the opportunity to construct, experiment with, and question your emerging professional future.
The Internship Support Seminar (SAS) is designed to complement the research conducted by the Architecture Professions Observatory (META). This integrated approach draws on theoretical contributions from the humanities, education, and communication:
- Sociology of work and professions: activity, employment, work and profession, professional identity, tasks and division of labor, professional skills, motivation profile.
- Professional practice - Project management (Maîtrise d'uvre): legislation and professional conditions in Belgium; full mission; stakeholders and partners; planning permission files; execution plans (specifications, measurements); health and safety coordination.
- Professional communication tools: CV; cover letter; portfolio; internship project.
- Reflective practices: reflective writing; experiential learning.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Specifically, by the end of this course, you will be able to:
(1) Explain the legal, regulatory, and institutional framework governing the practice of architecture in Belgium, identifying the legal obligations, regulatory bodies, as well as the rights and responsibilities associated with professional practice. This introduction includes:
- Knowledge of the legal texts regulating the profession (Architects' Act, codes of ethics, urban planning and construction regulations).
- Identification of professional and regulatory bodies (Order of Architects, SPF, local administrations).
- Understanding of the civil, criminal, and ethical responsibilities of architects.
- Identify your professional expectations in line with your values and representations.
- Conduct a relevant skills assessment for a first professional experience.
- Develop a coherent and realistic internship project, accompanied by a detailed plan of the steps required for its successful completion.
- Present yourself professionally in a job interview to secure an architecture internship, effectively using the appropriate tools (CV, cover letter, portfolio, online profile, internship project).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course includes an Internship Support Seminar (SAS), job interviews, as well as two distinct types of internships-long and short-each supervised by a different internship mentor.
The SAS (from 15/09 to 19/09, on 25/09, and every Thursday in October) launches the learning cycle. This phase focuses on exploring topics related to professional practice and professionalization. You will be divided into two groups to attend these in-person sessions (schedule to follow). The sessions include workshops, debates, practical exercises, observation, and reflection.
Job interviews (from 19/09 to 02/10 inclusive) aim to familiarize you with the realities of the professional market. They provide a first contact with potential hosts for the long internship. In preparation for these interviews, you will have learned during the SAS how to enhance your CV, cover letter, internship project, and online professional profile. Internship mentors are assigned at the end of this process.
The long internship (10 × 8 hours) (no later than 23/10 to 04/12 inclusive and 12/01 to 23/01) allows you to explore different contexts and professions within architecture.
The short internship (2 × 8 hours) (no later than 23/10 to 04/12 inclusive and 12/01 to 23/01) allows you to explore another aspect of the profession, complementary to what was studied during the long internship.
Important notes:
- Internships take place in all professional environments within the scope of architects' competencies.
- The faculty provides a list of internship mentors, but you are of course free to propose other host organizations.
- ATTENTION: Submission of all administrative documents is mandatory to participate in the internships.
