Learning unit contents

This course is an introduction to the textual as well as technical complexities of audiovisual and news translation. It intends to reflect upon the modalities of cultural and lingusitic transfer particular to audiovisual, news or advertising contents, with a focus on the conventions of the target culture and the expectations of the target audience. The role and responsibility of the translator as a "gatekeeper" will be discussed.

Journalism and information

Introduction to the various genres and sub-genres specific to journalism and to the transmission of information in general. Texts to be translated will be selected as to give an overview of the diversity of genres et text types as well as of the methods particular to the transmission of world news. The modalities of news transfer as well as the expectations of various target audiences will be taken into consideration. 

Part of the course will also be devoted to applying critical thinking and transparency in the use of AI in translation.

 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The students will be able to translate and adapt any media text (news and subtitles).

They'll be able to reflect on their practice and on the ideological and societal grounding of any textual and visual support.

Journalism and information

Students will have learned how to analyse the content and the form of various media and text supports. They will be able to discriminate between various text types and genres in the press and the media. They will be able to transfer various news productions into the target culture while respecting the texts' codes or adapting them to the stylistic expectations of the target audience.

They will also be encouraged to make an informed and transparent use of AI in translation.

 

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Excellent command of the French and English languages.

Acute intellectual curiosity and regular reading of the news.

Excellent knowledge of the source language, English, and perfect command of the target language, French, in its complexities and subtleties.

Translation and post-editing of selected texts, subtitling exercises (using free, online software)

Texts to be translated each week. Editing and revising of students' translations and collective translation to be prepared in groups.

This teaching unit ("Unité d'enseignement," or UE) is subject to the principle of the "note absorbante," which means that the student having obtained a mark of 7/20 or less for one of the learning activities ("activités d'apprentissage," or AA) will receive a failing grade for the entire unit and will have to retake the failed AA in the second session regardless of the mathematical average of the two AA grades

The exam will consist in translating a text/article on one of the themes tackled in the course of the semester.

The use of AI (machine translation and generative AI) during the exam is subject to the restrictions specified by the teacher.

The continuous assessment will consist of a translation project to be made during the year.
