Observation internship and professional training workshop

Within the observation placement (SO), students will complete three types of activities:

  • Attend an information evening (presentation of SO guidelines + awareness-raising about vocational/qualifying education with external guests).

  • Carry out two half-days of observation in secondary schools: one in general/transition education and one in vocational/qualifying education. For the transition track, students shadow one class for a half-day. For the qualifying track, two possible modalities are offered and explained during the first multidisciplinary AFP session. During these observations, students will also be invited to interview an experienced teacher and to administer a brief pupil survey.

  • Take part in an SO debrief session.

Teaching internship A and professional training workshop

Practical placements A and B are carried out in upper-secondary physics classes, for a total of 20 hours (8-10 hours for placement A and 10-12 hours for placement B).
These placements are supported by AFP (Ateliers de Formation Professionnelle - professional training workshops) designed to develop students' reflective posture before, during and after a placement. Attendance at AFP is compulsory. Except in cases of force majeure as judged by the course coordinators, two absences (justified or not) result in an absence grade for the AFP component.
Students are expected to keep a reflective logbook throughout each placement to record classroom difficulties of any kind. This logbook underpins the student's reflective work. Students are also asked to maintain an organised folder containing all lesson plans, handouts provided to pupils, and the administrative documents related to the placement (host-teacher form, agreement, host-teacher reimbursement form, etc.).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Observation internship and professional training workshop

Develop an initial reflective insight into the teaching profession based on classroom observations and information gathered from the various stakeholders interviewed.

Teaching internship A and professional training workshop

By the end of the unit, students will be able to:

  • prepare a lesson (define objectives, align with curricula/referentials, specify roles/tasks, timing);

  • conduct a lesson in class, mobilising approaches adapted to context;

  • analyse their practice and argue improvement avenues using observable evidence (logbook, classroom artefacts, feedback).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Observation internship and professional training workshop

Two in-person sessions: information session (2 h) and SO debrief session (3 h) in multidisciplinary small groups.

Teaching internship A and professional training workshop

Preparation, support and reflective AFP are directly linked to the placements. AFP are exclusively face-to-face and attendance is compulsory (except force majeure as above; two absences trigger an absence grade for AFP).
The logbook is the central tool for reflective practice and must be completed rigorously.
For the placements, students receive a "trainee folder" and a "host-teacher folder" to hand to the host teacher at the start of the placement. Placements must take place within the indicated periods (exact dates communicated in class), unless explicitly agreed otherwise by the coordinators. The exact timetable for each placement is recorded on the CeFEn platform; any change during the placement must also be entered there and emailed to the three course supervisors (see contacts below).
Students are asked to diversify their placements (grade levels, etc.).

Continuous assessment

Other : Proof of completion of both half-days

Further information:

Assessment is on a Completed / Not completed basis; no numeric grade is awarded.
If the SO is not completed, it precludes receiving a grade for "Placement Part 1."
To validate the SO, students must:

  • attend the SO debrief session

  • evidence completion of the SO by submitting proofs for the two observation half-days

Teaching internship A and professional training workshop

Written work / report

Continuous assessment

Further information:

Summative joint assessment by the course supervisors and the host teacher, based in particular on:

  • the quality of lesson plans;

  • the implementation observed during visits;

  • the post-placement report;

  • the reflective posture developed in AFP and throughout the submitted documents.
    Practical details (required documents, deadlines, organisation) are communicated in class and via institutional tools.
    Each placement report must be uploaded to the DOX shared folder accessible to the student and the three supervisors by the stated deadline. Failure to meet the deadline may result in a grade of zero.

Work placement(s)

Observation internship and professional training workshop

Two half-days of observation in secondary schools: one in the transition/general track and one in the qualifying/vocational track.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

Teaching internship A and professional training workshop

Documents (lesson plans, materials, logbook, etc.) are deposited in the shared DOX space communicated in class.
Encoding of hours and placement changes is done via the university's official platform. Any change-especially last-minute changes-must also be emailed to the three course supervisors.
