Learning unit contents

Organized by the student, the Professional Internship allows her/him to meet professionals linked to the world of marine sciences or to her/his Master's course in Oceanography. It consists of the completion of a one-month internship (continuous period, face-to-face) in a research institution, a company or an association.

This internship can be carried out in Belgium or abroad. It will be carried out under the guidance of a tutor designated in the host infrastructure. This internship is unpaid. A list of companies or research units is available from the coordinators. This list is not exhaustive. It is not recommended to carry it out in an organization requiring payment.

coordinators: Dr G. Lepoint (G.Lepoint@uliege.be; (Bât B6c, 1st floor, room 1/1. et Dr. Aida Alvera-Azcárate (a.alvera@uliege.be), (Bat B5a, 2nd floor, 2/56)

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The objective of this internship is to provide the student with a professional experience, either in the private, academic or other.

The internship is not aimed at developing original research material but rather at obtaining practical knowledge in a specific topic. The topic must be distinct from the one chosen for the master thesis, although it can be complementary.

Various transversal skills are potentially targeted by this internship: ability to write a cover letter, a CV, autonomy in a professional place or even integration into a team.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

These will be determined by the host institution and the topic of the internship.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The activities must be determined by the supervisor at the host institution. An agenda can be established.

However, care will be taken to diversify tasks and activities in order to provide a varied overview of the profession or the host organization.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Further information:

face-to-face. If other modalities are planned, it is mandatory to obtain an agreement from coordinators before the start of the internship.

The student must perform the tasks predefined by the host, during 4 weeks.

The internship must include tasks that allow the student to integrate into a team and be confronted with several realities of the profession. This internship cannot be carried out entirely independently without contact with other people.

Course materials and recommended or required readings

These will be determined by the host institution and the topic of the internship.

Written work / report

Further information:

Written work / report

Further information:

At the end of the internship, the student writes a report of maximum 10 pages (Times 12, spacing 1.5).

The use of "Large Language Models" (LLM, such as ChatGPT, LLaMa, GitHub Copilot...) is not authorized to generate the written work in whole or in part.

Given the wide variety of internships, the structure of the report is free but will imperatively contain:

- an internship title, an introduction, a context (one or two praragraphs),

-a brief description (one or two paragraphs) of the host organization with the email and telephone contact of the supervisor,

- the summary resulting from an interview of discussions with the internship supervisor (or members of the team) (i.e. no copy and paste from a website for example) relating to the various aspects of the professional framework (path, description of the work, positive, negative points). These discussions can possibly be done in the form of an interview,

-the specific objectives of the internship (i.e. task objectives),

-the objectives within the professionalizing framework of the internship,

-a detailed report of the activities, including a summary activity table,

and - to complete a synthesis of the experience acquired (scientific, social, professional, etc.). This last part is a self-evaluation of the internship (1/2 to 1 page max) focused on the experience (positive and negative) and professional perspectives.

In all cases, the report will include a self-evaluation of the internship (1 page max) by the student in terms of lived experience and professional perspective.

The student must send a .pdf copy of his/her report (for the 1st June (1rst Session) or 15 August (2nd Session) to the course coordinator (currently Prof. G. Lepoint, G.Lepoint@uliege.be).

The report is evaluated by the internship director and two ULiège moderators (Dr G. Lepoint and Dr. Aida Alvera Azcarate). The evaluation grid is sent by the coordinators. An evaluation grid, provided to the student on request, has been established by the Studies Council. For the evaluation, the tutor completes the evaluation grid (60% of the mark)(progress of the internship, inclusion, motivation). The moderators complete the last lines of the evaluation grid (20% of the mark each). For the report, the evaluation will take into account the following criteria: Compliance with instructions (length, requested parts, etc.), care of the report and spelling, host information, Definition and respect of internship objectives, qualities of the activity report and quality of reflective self-evaluation.The report is not evaluated by the supervisor.

Work placement(s)

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

The subject of the professional internship cannot be that of the dissertation (i.e. professional internship and end-of-study dissertation are two different courses). However, it is permitted to carry out both internships in the same research group, as long as the subjects are distinct.

IMPORTANT: This internship is organized by the student. Prior to carrying out the internship, the student will contact the co-ordinator so that he/she, in consultation with the study council, agrees to carry out the internship.

A "Professional Internship" form must be returned, with the objectives of the internship. This sheet is provided by the coordinators, as well as a non-exhaustive list of internship locations at the start of the academic year.

IMPERATIVELY, the internship must be organized before the end of February, even if, in agreement with the dissertation promoter and coordinators, it takes place after this date.

In the event of an internship abroad outside europe, the student must request authorization from the Authorities via the site: https://www.student.uliege.be/cms/c_11156513/fr/myetudiant-demande-d-autorisation-du-recteur).
 .

Students are insured for work-related expenses during their internship (including repatriation/hospitalization in the event of a work-related accident). However, for internships taking place abroad, it is advisable to take out your own repatriation insurance, particularly to cover risks unrelated to the internship.

For all internships, an agreement between the internship location and ULiège must be completed in advance and sent to the external supervisors, the coordinators for signature, and then to Ms. Kristel Karremans. In all cases, a risk/position sheet must be completed and sent to Ms. Karremans. These documents are available either on your e-campus (position/risk sheet, internship agreement in a ULiège lab) or via the aforementioned website (internship abroad or outside ULiège). Internships completed in Belgium cannot be paid.
