Learning unit contents

The course is divided into 7 sessions:

1) Introductory session: presentation of the course and assessment methods

2) Sociology of law and justice: basic concepts of the sociology of law and justice and the digitisation of justice

3) Law, justice and mediation: theories of mediation and links to economics

4) Sociology of law and justice

5) Sociology of mediation

6) Oral presentations

7) Oral presentations



 

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  - present the judicial actors and the functioning of the Belgian judicial institution

  - discuss the place and social uses of law and mediation in today's society

  - analytically and critically depict mediation practices and policies via the use of the concepts and bibliographical references presented during the course

  - define different concepts related to sociological theories of law, justice and mediation

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Mastery of the French language

Basic knowledge of the sociological literature

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Lectures (based on articles or slideshows sent to students) punctuated with participatory questions and case studies. Work to be completed and oral presentations by students.

Further information:

First session:

Assessment consists of submitting a written assignment completed in groups (50% of the mark) and a group oral presentation on the assignment (50% of the mark). The mark for the assignment is collective, while the mark for the oral presentation is individual.

Detailed instructions and assessment criteria will be provided to students at the first class session.

The assignment must then be presented orally. Each student must participate in the oral presentation, otherwise they will not be awarded a mark.

Second session:

Two options:

1) If the work was completed in the first session, the student will be questioned orally about the work.

2) If the work was not completed in the first session, the student will have to complete an individual assignment, the details of which will be specified.
