Learning unit contents

  • Review of basic concepts in planning, monitoring and evaluation (criteria, types of analysis, impact assessment, theory-based approaches, etc.)
  • Exercise (in class): analysis of an article on evaluation
  • Evaluation in practice: position of the evaluator, evaluation and decision-making, management of an evaluation process
  • Case studies (group work): in-depth analysis of an evaluation report

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The course aims to:

  • Consolidate understanding of the main concepts in planning, monitoring and evaluating health programmes and policies.
  • Understand how an evaluation is managed.
  • Exercise critical thinking in evaluation practice.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic knowledge of public health project management is a prerequisite. In addition, students must be able to apply the knowledge acquired in courses on quantitative, qualitative and economic methods, as well as in health system organisation.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The first class will include a theoretical presentation and a classroom exercise.

A case study (group work analysing an evaluation report) and its presentation in class will allow students to put the knowledge they have acquired into practice.
