Learning unit contents
This course focuses on the institutional context and life within residential care facilities (MR/MRS in Belgium, EHPAD in France). Each institution includes speech and language therapists in its staffing standards. It is therefore essential to understand this specific professional environment and the issues related to supporting residents.
With this in mind, the course will address a range of topics, including institutional values, admission and reception practices, the importance of life histories, activities within institutions, and the central role of factual observation in professional practice.
The approach is deliberately broad: this is not a course designed solely for speech and language therapists, but rather a reflection relevant to all professionals in the sector (management, physicians, nursing staff, etc.). Nevertheless, particular attention will be given to communication in the broad sense - verbal, non-verbal, and interactional.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
This course is intended to be as interactive as possible. It will alternate between lecture and exchanges with students. The time devoted to debate and clinical exchange will be (when possible) based on vignettes, videos, etc. The student must be able to question the way certain clinical situations are 'managed'.
