Learning unit contents
For readability purposes, these pedagogical commitments are not written in inclusive language, but they nevertheless apply to men, women, and non-binary individuals.
This course introduces students to the clinical approach in psychology, specifically addressing the following elements:
- The framework of the psychological assessment;
- Clinical reasoning processes and the cognitive biases associated with them;
- The application of the Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) approach;
- The clinical interview: general principles, communication techniques and shared understanding;
- Case conceptualisation: areas to investigate;
- Tool-based assessment: the use of standardised tests, their psychometric qualities, factors to consider when interpreting results, taking into account normative reference data.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The course is part of a training program. Several concepts will be revisited and further explored in the PSYC5915 and PSYC5916 courses; a higher level of competency mastery will also be expected in various Master's courses and during internships. For this course, the learning outcomes are tailored to the end of the Bachelor's degree cycle. Specifically, by the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- Explain the framework of the clinical assessment, the principles of the person-centered approach, and the clinical reasoning processes;
- Explain and illustrate the cognitive biases that may arise during clinical reasoning;
- Demonstrate a "novice" level of mastery in clinical reasoning within the context of a psychological assessment;
- Identify the four pillars of EBP within a clinical vignette and use the Research pillar to answer background questions;
- Justify the choice of a standardised tool based on its psychometric qualities and a threshold for comparing the patient's results with the reference sample;
- Link the patient's results with the comments gathered during the interview;
- Use interview techniques that support the therapeutic alliance and the gathering of information in a clinical interview.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
A good knowledge of evidence-based research, statistics and psychometrics is required, as well as an ethical approach. Therefore, the courses 'General Ethics in Psychology' and 'Introduction to Psychometrics' are prerequisites; the course 'The Research in Evidence-Based Practice' is a co-requisite.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
This course is based on in-person sessions, eLearning (on eCampus and through a MOOC), and practical sessions mandatory.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Blended learning
Further information:
Combination of in-person and remote learning activities during both semesters.
Additional information:
Three cycles of practical sessions will be organized:
- TP 1 'Online clinical reasoning' - eLearning exercises on certain lessons from Q1: completion recommended;
TP 2 'Mrs C.' (three 2-hour sessions) - Integrative exercise on the subject matter of Q1: participation compulsory ;
TP 3 'Communication techniques' (two 2-hour sessions + three videoscopies) - Role-playing to practise communication techniques: compulsory participation, taken into account in the assessment criteria.
Course materials and recommended or required readings
Platform(s) used for course materials:
- eCampus
- MyULiège
Further information:
Slides and other course-related documents (e.g., scientific articles) will be uploaded to eCampus as the academic year progresses. Course-related communications will be sent via the eCampus email system.
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )
Continuous assessment
Further information:
1° Passing the January written exam (Q1)
A written exam will be held in January on the concepts covered and studied during the first quarter. It will consist of short essay questions and open-ended questions. The written exam grade will account for 50% of the final grade.
2° Production of videos and practical work on 'Communication techniques' (Q2)
Due to the educational/training value of videoscopy, each student will be required to produce and analyse three interview videos featuring themselves during Q2 (schedule imposed and communicated at the beginning of the year). In these videos, students will be required to conduct a 10-minute interview using the communication techniques covered in the course.
In addition, attendance at four face-to-face practical sessions on 'communication techniques' is compulsory.
In the event of failure to complete one of the three videos or absence from one of the practical sessions without a medical certificate, a fail mark will automatically be awarded in the first session.
3° Sufficient mastery of communication techniques (Q2)
One of the videos produced by the student (see 2°) will be assessed by a clinician. Using a criteria grid, the clinician will assess the student's mastery of communication techniques. The video mark will count for 50% of the final mark.
The principle of the absorbing mark applies: the student must obtain a minimum of 10/20 in the January exam and in their video interview on communication techniques. If this is the case, an average of the two marks will be calculated. If this is not the case, the failed partial exam(s) (mark below 10/20) must be retaken in the second session and the (lowest) failing mark will be recorded. The same criteria will be used in the second session. No partial exemptions from one year to the next.
Work placement(s)
Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
Each student is expected to take an active part in the various sessions.
This course is not available to non-French-speaking exchange students.
Compared to the 2024-2025 academic year:
- Modification of the theoretical course content
- Modification of the content of the practical sessions and exercises
