Learning unit contents

Throughout their time at university, students have several opportunities to develop their ability to search, evaluate and use scientific information. This course is one such opportunity. The knowledge and skills acquired will be useful throughout their studies and professional lives.

The course introduces the fundamentals of evidence-based practice (EBP) and the role of scientific literature in this approach. It outlines the scientific publication process and the issues involved, as well as the specific characteristics of literature in the fields of psychology, speech therapy and education.

The course also introduces the main information search tools specialising in these fields, including those incorporating artificial intelligence features. Students will learn the key steps in formulating research questions, identifying relevant sources, and analysing scientific publications.

Particular attention is paid to understanding the different types of literature review and to adopting best practice in citing sources in accordance with APA standards. The course aims to raise awareness of academic integrity and critical thinking when using scientific information.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • understand the principles of evidence-based practice (EBP) and the role of scientific publications, including literature reviews, in this approach;
