Learning unit contents

Observation internship

As part of the Observation Internship (SO), students will be required to complete three types of activities:

  • Participate in an information session (presentation of the SO guidelines + awareness-raising on vocational education with external speakers).

  • Carry out two half-days of observation in secondary schools, one in general education (enseignement de transition) and the other in technical education (enseignement qualifiant). For the half-day in general education, students will be expected to follow a class of pupils for the duration of the session. For the half-day in technical education, two modalities will be proposed and explained during the first multidisciplinary AFP session. During these observation half-days, students will also be invited to interview an experienced teacher and to conduct a brief survey among the pupils.

  • Participate in a debriefing session on the SO.

Teaching internship A

The pedagogical internship will involve various activities having to do with practices of observation applied to a class studying French as a foreign language (or as a second language, alpha language, etc.), paying attention to teaching in various contexts (non-profit organisations, secondary teaching, foreign universities, etc.), to different sorts of work done in cooperation with supervisors and fellow students, and to writing thoughtful and critical reports for the various internship programmes.

Teaching internship B

The pedagogical internship will involve various activities having to do with practices of observation applied to a class studying French as a foreign language (or as a second language, alpha language, etc.), paying attention to teaching in various contexts (non-profit organisations, secondary teaching, foreign universities, etc.), to different sorts of work done in cooperation with supervisors and fellow students, and to writing thoughtful and critical reports for the various internship programmes.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Observation internship

To take an initial reflective look at the teaching profession based on the observations conducted and the information collected from the various stakeholders interviewed.

Teaching internship A

Students will learn to :

  • Develop an accurate critical view of teaching practices associated with French as a foreign/second language
  • Produce adequate lesson plans that are appropriate for a given teaching situation
  • Adapt themselves to differing teaching conditions (public, in different kinds of spaces, institutional constraints, etc.)

Teaching internship B

Students will learn to :

  • Develop an accurate critical view of teaching practices associated with French as a foreign/second language
  • Produce adequate lesson plans that are appropriate for a given teaching situation
  • Adapt themselves to differing teaching conditions (public, in different kinds of spaces, institutional constraints, etc.)

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Teaching internship A

Non-native French speakers must have achieved at least the C1 level in the French language in order to be admitted to internship programmes.

Teaching internship B

Non-native French speakers must have achieved at least the C1 level in the French language in order to be admitted to internship programmes.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Observation internship

Two in-person sessions: an information session (2 hours) and a debriefing session on the Observation Internship (SO) (3 hours), conducted in the form of small interdisciplinary group work.

Teaching internship A

Initially interns must observe classes in French as a foreign/second language at the ISLV and will be invited to discuss their observations at a meeting with other interns and the directors of the Didactic Service for French as a foreign/second language.

For each internship module (two modules in all), students will produce at least two hours (of group) observation by the internship supervisor, and
- 20 hours of teaching in the initially observed class for Part I of the internship (A and B).
- 40 hours of teaching in the initially observed class for Part I of the internship.

Lessons will be prepared with the assistance of the internship supervisor, who will have the task of helping with the lessons that are presented by the intern, and also of evaluating them.

Each lesson given will be the subject of preparation and a written summary report of one page maximum (see assessment methods).

Supervision sessions are organized to assist trainees in the preparation of their first sequence plans.

Furthermore, organized in disciplinary or interdisciplinary groups, the practical workshops (AFP) are intended to develop students' reflective approach before, during, or after an internship. Participation in these practical workshops (AFP) is mandatory. Except in cases of force majeure determined by the course coordinators, two absences (whether justified or not) will result in an absence grade for the practical workshops (AFP).

Teaching internship B

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Observation internship

Face-to-face course

Further information:

The information session and the debriefing session will take place exclusively on-site.

Teaching internship A

Face-to-face course

Further information:

The intern may choose the locations where the work is to be performed, but at least one part of it must be performed in Belgium, and it is recommended that the types of public institutions be varied, in order for the work experience to be both rich and diverse.

In addition, the organisation of a work placement abroad is conditional on the successful completion of a first work placement in Belgium.

If the intern is already teaching, his/ her current workplace can be acceptable as a location for internship work, provided that the student is being supervised by an internship director (fellow teacher, pedagogical director) and a member of the Didactics Service for French as a foreign/second language is able to visit the intern and observe him / her at that workplace.

Observation internship

Continuous assessment

Other : Proof of completion of the two half-days of the Observation Internship (SO).

Further information:

The SO assessment is of the type "Completed" / "Not Completed" and will not result in a grade.
If the SO is marked as "Not Completed," it will prevent the student from receiving the grade for the course "Stage Partim 1".

To validate the SO, students must:

  • Participate in the SO debriefing session (see "Continuous Assessment");

  • Provide proof of completion of the SO by submitting the certificates corresponding to the two observation half-days (see "Other above").

Teaching internship A

Written work / report

Continuous assessment

Further information:

Observation sessions and practical sessions (AFP) are mandatory. They are not subject to a numerical evaluation but a "YES/NO" in the final evaluation grid. The "NO" leads to postponement.

Each teaching internship is subject to an evaluation by the internship supervisor and a self-assessment by the trainee.

Each lesson given will be the subject of detailed preparation (see teaching sheet available on eCampus) and a summary written report of one page maximum.

When all internships have been completed (Parts I and II), trainees write an individual professional development portfolio, with a reflective purpose, in which they mobilize the knowledge and know-how developed through the training, in connection with their professional practice.

The final grade obtained for each internship is an average of the grade awarded by the internship supervisor and those awarded by the members of the didactics department following the visits (and portfolio assessment for Part II internships).
