Learning unit contents
The observation internship take place throughout the year in classes of French as a foreign/second language (or alpha-FLE). These observations are the subject of a brief written report by the trainee and discussed during practical sessions.
The teaching periods take place in classes of French as a foreign language, second or alpha-FLE, mostly in secondary education in Belgium. Some practical hours can be realized in other contexts (asbl, social promotion, university, abroad...).
The practical sessions (AFP) consist of analyzing the observations of classes and the teaching stages in order to develop a critical view on the practices of class.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Initially interns must observe classes in French as a foreign/second language at the secondary school and at ISLV, and will be invited to discuss their observations at a meeting with other interns and the members of the Didactic Service for French as a foreign/second language.
Each practical course will include observations of the supervisor and the class in which the trainee will teach. These must imperatively take place before the teaching practices so that the trainee can adapt his preparations to the learners and to the particular context of the course.
These observation sessions will be exploited during practical seminars sessions.
After observing their supervisor and the class in which they will teach, the trainees must prepare lesson plans, in collaboration with their supervisor to whom they will submit their preparations at least 1 week before beginning to teach. The first preparations may also be submitted to a pedagogical instructor to assist in the development of the pedagogical sequences.
Each training course will be evaluated by the supervisor, using the evaluation grid provided by the FLE Teaching Department.
Each lesson given will be the subject of detailed preparation (see teaching sheet available on eCampus).
The practical sessions (AFP) consist of analyzing the observations of classes and the teaching stages in order to develop a critical view on the practices of class.
Trainees must actively participate in exchanges and attendance at sessions is mandatory.

Teaching internships in Belgium and abroad
Initially interns must observe classes in French as a foreign/second language or alpha, at the institution of their choice, and will be invited to discuss their observations at a meeting with other interns and the members of the Didactic Service for French as a foreign language.
For each internship module (two modules in all), students will produce at least two hours (of group) observation by the internship supervisor, and twenty hours of teaching in the class initially observed.
Lessons will be prepared with the assistance of the internship supervisor, who will have the task of helping with the lessons that are presented by the intern, and also of evaluating them.
Each lesson given will be the subject of preparation and a written summary report of one page maximum (see assessment methods).

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face course
Further information:
The trainee must choose the place of internship from the list proposed by the special didactic service. He must carry out an internship in Belgium throughout his training.
In addition, the organisation of a work placement abroad is conditional on the successful completion of a first work placement in Belgium.
If the intern is already teaching, his current workplace can be acceptable as a location for internship work, provided that the student is being supervised by an internship director (fellow teacher, pedagogical director) and a member of the Didactics Service for French as a foreign/second language is able to visit the intern and observe him at that workplace.
Participation in practical sessions (AFP) is mandatory.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written work / report
Continuous assessment
Further information:
Observation sessions and practical sessions are mandatory. They are not subject to a numerical evaluation but a "YES/NO" in the final evaluation grid. The "NO" leads to postponement.
Each teaching internship is subject to an evaluation by the internship supervisor and a self-assessment by the trainee.
Each lesson given will be the subject of detailed preparation (see teaching sheet available on eCampus) and a summary written report of one page maximum.
Trainees write an individual professional development portfolio, with a reflective purpose, in which they mobilize the knowledge and know-how developed through the training, in connection with their professional practice.
The final grade obtained for each internship is an average of the grade awarded by the internship supervisor and those awarded by the members of the didactics department following the visits and the portfolio assessment.
