Learning unit contents

The course links the issue of equality to that of public sphere. Public sphere is understood here as the space where ideas circulate. In this course, we will examine the evolution of the relationship between public and private spheres. Our relationship with public sphere is constantly changing under the impetus of technological innovation and the feminist revolution of the 20th century.

The course will be structured around two themes: 1) the development of information and communication technologies and how they are transforming our social relationships, and 2) the rise of feminist issues and feminist theories aimed at explaining and combating gender inequalities.

The course will be structured around three periods: the 18th century, because it established a model of public space that structures our contemporary societies; 2) the 1950s and 1960s and the development of communication technologies; 3) the present day and its phenomena of publicizing the intimate and criticizing romantic love.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Students will be able to work independently on the major issues related to the concept of public space as covered during the course.
