Learning unit contents
As part of the "Art&Sciences at FPLSE" project, this course offers an introduction to promoting scientific research through mediation and visual communication. Students will choose a research topic of their choice and summarize it in a scientific poster. A poster gallery will be organized in the FPLSE lobby (if possible), with an electronic voting system to elect the best scientific poster. A mini-conference will also be organized at the FPLSE to present the posters orally (in a format inspired by "my thesis in 180 seconds"), open to the faculty public, with a public vote to elect the best presentation.
To this end, lectures and practical work will support writing, scientific, graphic, artistic, and oral skills. The course will be structured in three phases:
Presentation of the promotion of scientific research through mediation and visual communication:
- What is a conference?
- What is a poster in a conference?
- The IMRED method for writing an article
- Communicating via a scientific poster
- Choosing a topic: master thesis or other scientific topic of personal interest
- Learning to summarize, popularize, and convey information (in writing, visually, and graphically)
- Scientific writing: IMRED
- Graphic design (visual communication): visual transcription created using Illustrator or Canva
- Exhibition in the FPLSE lobby (if possible)
- Theoretical and pragmatic approach to oral presentations: criteria, role-playing, methodology, mindset, physical preparation for successful public speaking.
- Preparation and presentation with audience voting.
- Presentation of the posters by their authors in the form of a mini-conference and audience voting.
- Award ceremony for the winners.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The overall aims of the course are to ensure that students are able to :
- Read, understand, and summarize a research topic of their choice.
- Transcribe it into a scientific poster.
- Develop infographic skills.
- Defend this research orally and improve their ability to speak in public.
- Adopt an approach that promotes scientific value.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Basic office automation and Internet skills, basic scientific knowledge (having completed the TIR module or thesis preparation)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
- Acquire theoretical concepts on promotion and mediation in a scientific context.
- Research and synthesize research while respecting the spatial constraints of the poster support.
- Design the poster (visual communication) using (your choice of) Illustrator or Canva software: a training module is offered during this course.
- Print and display your poster: a free large-format printing service is available.
- Practice your oral presentation: a training module is included.
- Defend your poster orally at a conference: the conference will be scheduled within the course timetable.
- Help organize the exhibition and conference.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Blended learning
Further information:
Face-to-face (for the most part) and distance occasionally
As the course is structured around an event-based project, regular attendance at classes is essential. Furthermore, participation in the mini-conference is mandatory (= assessment).
Course materials and recommended or required readings
Platform(s) used for course materials:
- eCampus
Further information:
You will find a course entitled "PEDA4073 - Promoting scientific research through mediation and visual communication" online at eCampus. This is the official course space. You will find various types of resources there throughout the course.
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
oral exam
Other : Poster to create
Further information:
The course assessment is based on the quality of the poster (scientific content and graphic design) and the relevance of the oral presentation during the conference.
NB: The public voting system and designation of "winners" aims to motivate students and highlight the work they have done. The student's final grade will be awarded by the course teacher.
