Learning unit contents
In Belgium, higher education pedagogy (HEP) is still a young field of research. However, it is enriched by numerous publications, specialized international conferences, and significant reflective activity.
Located within the "Accompanying - Supporting - Advising" graduation profile, this course aims at introducing students to the role of an instructional developer. It offers students the opportunity to lay the foundations for supporting higher education teachers as they reflect on their practice.
More specifically, through an approach that takes into account students' individual pedagogical interests, this course will lead to:
- Discovering the realities of HEP through current issues that affect it, and more specifically by addressing the challenges encountered by higher education teachers in their practice;
- Exploring conceptual benchmarks of HEP related to a challenge identified through interviewing a HE teacher (eg. themes of higher education student motivation, group work and other possible activities in large cohorts, competence development, monitoring field activities, etc.);
- Preparing and analyzing an interview with a higher education teacher (the interview in itself is included in the PEDA4066-F-a seminar) to become aware of some of their challenges and enabling authentic and focused work on a targeted challenge;
- Analyzing and discussing their own analyses, always situating them within the field of HEP;
- Contributing to the creation of group posters, which will allow these experiences to be used as a common tool and shared with higher education teachers at a Higher Education Pedagogy conference.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Through this course, students will discover a new field: higher education pedagogy. In this new field, the course will lay the foundations for the competence of supporting higher education teachers in their reflection on their practice.
The specific requirements linked to this competence will be detailed to students during the first two course sessions.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
None
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Students will work in subgroups, although some stages of their work will be individual.
To explore the chosen topic, they will search for material (articles, conference proceedings, books, professional testimonials, online sites), interview a professor, participate in internal seminars, and produce a poster.
To share their work among groups and give meaning to their research process, they will use a shared tool that lists the resources discovered. They will also produce a group poster, which will benefit both the interviewed professors and more than one hundred higher education professors present at a specialized conference.
Note that this course will be closely linked to a seminar (PEDA4066-F-a), organized into three complementary practical sessions : (1) a mock interview to learn about questioning and information gathering techniques, (2) conducting the interview with a higher education teacher, and (3) presenting the poster developed by each group.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Blended learning

- Microsoft Teams
Further information:
Specific books will be suggested, such as Berthiaume et Rege Colet (2013): « La pédagogie de l'enseignement supérieur : repères théoriques et applications pratiques - Tome 1 : Enseigner au supérieur », in order to understand the context of Higher Education pedagogy (WITHOUT the need for purchase).
Most of the additional resources will be listed by the students themselves in a dedicated tool, presented during the course sessions.
The online course space (e-campus) will allow for discussion, as well as the sharing of materials used during lectures and reminders of assignment instructions and deadlines. It will be mandatory to upload those assignments to e-campus.
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
written exam ( open-ended questions )
Continuous assessment
Further information:
Some of the mandatory assignments (eCampus "devoirs") will be included in the course grade, to supplement/adjust the final written evaluation (written exam). This final written exam will partly concern the individual and group work completed throughout the course sessions.
The evaluation for this course will not include the one of the three seminars (see "learning activities" upper), which will be graded separately in PEDA4066-F-a.
